ACS has a great responsibility to our world and our species in assembling, organizing, and transmitting reliable, usable information among leading experts, and those aspiring to become one for the future of our evolution. However, ACS has unnecessarily created a culture among its own people that working harder is working smarter. Working longer hours is a measurement of success. Promotion is only achieved by those who eat, sleep, and breathe ACS, and who make zero to little personal time to manage their own basic needs, regardless of producing results. Promotions are handed to those working on self starting easy popular topics like nanotechnology, while they scrutinize those who are working in difficult markets, telling them it is their performance that holds back the journal. They created a class system within a hierarchy where ethics, morals, and policy are established by the few to create a great divide in benefit, growth, or personal upward mobility. To prove this culture one only needs to simply look at the driveway of ACS in downtown Washington DC. ACS has a beautiful small semi circle driveway in front of their building, which was designed to be wide enough to accommodate traffic from both directions. However, ACS security is ordered by top admin to allow a limited few to park on this driveway, converting the driveway unknowingly to the oncoming driver, into a one way driveway. Then when someone pulls into the driveway the wrong way, the security guard is asked by executive management to question the validity of their visit. When Explained to security I am here to pick up my spouse. Rather than letting me know this is an unmarked one way driveway, please pull around. I WAS told that is the director leaving the building and he wanted me to tell you just how wrong you are for blocking his wife's access to pick him up, and he had to walk ten steps further to get to his car. (Paraphrased), from the actual rude comments she made to me based on what the director "told her" to say. By the way, we could not find the person she pointed to on the ACS directory she called the director, so it was a lie, based on her opinion of my appearance, status, and car I drive (pick up truck), to get me to comply with an unwritten, un-posted, and classist rule created by the privileged in power at ACS. This making the driveway an exclusivity, when its design is inclusivity, translates into all the decisions in ACS policies, like but not limited to: assigned office space, traveling for 18 hours within a 24 hour period, promotions, work location, work hours, work load assigned, expectations of output...... you get the point. ACS did not achieve its status by these exclusive status policies of the few; however, it constantly replaces its CEO because those in real power at ACS, use the CEO's leaving as a sign of good things to come, when really its just a figure head we cull to give our employees hope for positive future change, which will never come. To sum up ACS: unless you join at the top of the food chain, expect leadership to lead not by example, but to chronically lie to you during department wide or companywide meetings on a regular basis to justify why they are dictating not leading. Like telling the staff we have not noticed an uptic on people leaving ACS for other remote jobs, since the return to office policy. When MOST smart people leaving a job, will Never tell the truth during an exit interview, if they want a recommendation for the next 20 years. The Lies we tell ourselves to justify unfairness are growing at an alarming rate since the pandemic, and ACS is the barometer leading this charge backwards!
