Likely the worst grocery store in the entire district. No cart whatsoever to use. Hopeless, incompetent “employees.” NEVER GO HERE. This Safeway needs to close completely and be replaced with another company altogether. I’m writing the corporation about how terrible it is.

Pay attention to expiration dates on the products they sell. This store has two shelves stocked with marked down, expired perishable snacks. Today is Jan 5, 2024 and these higher shelf products have "Use By" dates ranging from Nov 29, 2023 to Dec 27, 2023. This is a photo of the lower shelf that also has expired P3 Portable Protein snack products.

For the love of god, please don't come here unless you just need a few items. Shelf-stable and frozen food is fine (albeit overpiced), but produce is often rotting, mushy, and so expensive. One time my boyfriend also bought chicken that was already rotting as soon as he opened it at home.Lastly, I think some of their employees can be very rude. For example, on Jan. 3rd around 12:45pm, when I was at the self-checkout (the one closer to the end where the starbucks is), I had to have the person overseeing that section come enter a code for me when I scanned an item. I politely said, "oh I have another one too" just in case she didn't see that I had 2 of those items. I guess that pissed her off, because she turned around, stared me in the eye, and said, "I KNOW. I UNDERSTAND." Not sure how a full adult woman in her 50s (not sure her age but she was def older) acts like that, but okay. I get it, sometimes we hate our jobs, sometimes we're miserable, but there's no excuse to take out your misery on others.

You couldn’t find a worse grocery store. Self check out machines are always broken, useless staff, and expired food litters the shelves.

i don’t understand why they don’t have carts or baskets for customers but the store itself is really inadequate for groceriesedit: since my last review, they have installed a giant “robocop” outside that yells at folks on the sidewalk. It’s very loud and is a noise nuisance. I might not be able to go lower than one star, but at least I can go to a different grocery store.

The security guards are beyond aggressive and the recent “upgrades” to self check out ensure they can berate and stop any person they encounter. This in no way makes a comfortable shopping environment and I will happily go out of my way to avoid this store.

I live in the neighborhood and I really like our Safeway, here. They have to operate in difficult circumstances sometimes and they do it very well. I have always had courteous and competent interactions.I do want to shout out Dominic the Butcher. He helped me on Thanksgiving with the right cut at the right price. He is helping me Christmas. Professional and knowledgeable. Thank you!

Honestly, probably one of the worst supermarkets I've ever been to. The staff are rude for no reason, it's been fraught with shoplifting, there's no carts, the produce is awful, and there is inconsistent selection of items. They've made some improvements in recent months to crack down on shoplifting, including installing one-way gates and other security measures, but this is still an awful place to shop. After an employee screamed at me to "walk my ass to the other counter" I had it, and I won't shop here again.

This Safeway is TERRIBLE! I placed an order to have my medication delivered. I called to confirm they had received the online request for delivery because in the past I had been told that the system had not transmitted the request. As suspected, I was told that the order has not come through; but, would be delivered today. I was then called back to be told that it could not be delivered today because they did not get the request before noon. I think I called by noon. But I cannot prove it. When I said I would come and get it I was told they could not refund the delivery charge to my credit card.Last week, I went into the store to pick up something. I validated my parking ticket. When I tried to get out of the garage. I was told it was not validated and I had to pay $9 for 10 minutes.Albertsons should be ashamed to have a store operating with this level of Incompetence. It’s TERRIBLE!

It's a huge store for an urban supermarket. And it appeared impressive before entering. It's well lit and convenient to the Metro. The odor of cat urine is pervasive throughout the store. This was true on two successive visits on two days. I would hope that makes. It rodent free. But not fragrant! At 10am on Saturday morning the pharmacist did not seem to be filling prescriptions but he did not come to the customer window though I waited patiently for 10 minutes. He did not acknowledge me.Stocking on the shelves is spotty. Checkouts are understaffed. Three or four queues with a dozen or more customers.

As of 10/28/2023, I'm happy to update you that Safeway SW DC has gotten itself together. After a very unsafe and unsatisfying summer, the store has not only renovated the interior, but has also re-staffed, and re-stocked. New security gates have been installed to prevent "steal and run" activity, and there's not an appropriate amount of actual law enforcement with badges shown in the store. Gone are the days of clearly teenage security guards. Kudos to the staff who stuck it out this past summer, because it was rough and hard long unsafe nights at this Safeway. Happy to see the much-needed change. Now it's a longer conversation about DC safety and the Mayor regarding the need for such security measures in a grocery store, but I'll take this over what once was. Do yourself a favor if you live in Southwest DC, and give our Safeway another chance.

One of the only grocery stores in the area. It features a deli/bakery, with incredible chicken and great bread, sushi and sandwich area, a pizza oven and a Starbucks. There is fresh produce, a good meat department, frozen and dairy. There is a decent wine selection as well as plenty of home goods. The store is strategically placed right next door to the Waterfront stop on the green line. Safeway has an app and is worthwhile to get the most out of your deals. Security guards are present but shoplifting seems problematic.

What's this DC Safeway's nickname? They're probably closing. The store has been moving things around and locking things up for months. Shoplifting and theft are rampant. There are never any carts or hand baskets. It's not always clean. A disabled neighbor told me he was beaten up there. Employees and security are unconcerned and rude. There are always at least two or three self-check out stations out of commission at any given time; there may be one other cashier working a really long line of people holding everything in their arms. It's unfortunate because this is the only grocery store in the neighborhood. People who don't drive and people who have mobility issues rely on the convenience of this location. At least Waterfront has a good farmer's market.
