Sankofa Video Books & Café, founded in 1998 by filmmaking couple Haile and Shirikiana Gerima, is a unique and vibrant establishment that specializes in books and videos about people of African descent worldwide. The business was named after the Sankofa movie produced by the founders. In 2007, the Sankofa Café was added to the premises, creating a combined charm that attracts both the hungry and the inquisitive. The café serves delicious food, including a popular spicy salmon melt, as well as smoothies and a strong mocha. Customers praise the high-quality, home-cooked-style breakfast, particularly the scrambled eggs on ciabatta. The bookstore has a strong African vibe, with African jewelry, fabrics, and a vast collection of African history books. It's a popular spot for Howard University students to study, socialize, and connect with their roots. While the music played can sometimes make it difficult to concentrate, the overall atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Sankofa is more than just a bookstore and café; it's a hub of community and connection. The business hosts various events, and customers have reported chance encounters with renowned photographers and artists. The friendly, family-like service from the staff only adds to the unique experience.

Another governance structure spot on Georgia Ave. Recently I went to purchase a couple of books from them when the author would be present for an event I was unable to attend. I was able to purchase the books and get them signed by that author! Great customer service and beautiful ambiance.
