The Potter's House Café & Bookstore is a beloved community spot located in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of DC. Established in 1960, it has a long history of fostering deep conversation, creative expression, and community transformation. Reopened in early 2015 with a redesigned space, it offers a welcoming environment that combines a café, bookstore, and event space. The café features a menu made from scratch with a plant-centric approach, offering something for everyone. Its "Pay It Forward" program ensures that anyone, regardless of circumstance, can enjoy a meal, whether a free coffee, sandwich, or soup. The coffee program is high quality, with options like single origin espresso from Counter Culture Coffee and herbal teas from Rishi Tea, complemented by house-made biscuits and good pastries. Visitors enjoy the cozy atmosphere, with plenty of seating inside and outside, including window tables perfect for reading or people-watching. The bookstore adds a unique touch, featuring politically oriented books from a leftist perspective among shelves scattered throughout the space. The café is also known for its history, mission, and community service, making it a place where diverse people feel welcome. While some reviews mention issues with food quality, staff training, and changes in the social atmosphere, many still appreciate the café’s mission, history, and warm environment. Overall, The Potter's House offers a special blend of quality coffee, a meaningful community space, and a welcoming atmosphere that continues to serve as a vital part of the neighborhood.
Nice cozy cafe and bookstore. Can't speak on the drinks but the muffins were too buttery for me, and seems like they used a gluten alternative which I personally don't like.
