A great local bookstore and cafe. Came on a Sunday right after opening and it was nice and warm (in a chilly day) a few people here which made for a really nice breakfast where I could read some books and drink tea. No downsides to this great shop. They had great music (soft) playing in the background and had great seating options lining the windows (lots of light and great for people watching) and At least ten tables for outdoor seating Highly recommend getting anything with the house made biscuits. I got to breakfast sandwich with bacon and it was overflowing with egg (yum)

YOOOOO! What happened that I missed this one until now? That is insane. And I can't say because it opened very recently such that it wasn't around when I was doing most of my coffee shop odyssee...it's been around since 1960!!! And is in the heart of the best of DC, between Columbia Heights and Adams Morgan. Oh and: It is absolutely out of this world as far as coffee shops are concerned. It is combined with a bookstore--the books are strewn in the midst of the café in shelves all over the place. Lots of writer types, including those who operate with physical paper (like I said, this thing has a legacy of 1960). I had a longer chat with one of the women behind the counter. The other one looked very much like the progressive Christian type. And indeed, Potter's history is connected to various Christan houses and doing the good work for the poor in the neighbourhood. Toward the end of a long stay, a clearly very poor, likely homeless, 70-something year old white man who also seemed to have mental issues, came in and wandered back and forth in the spacious café, on occasion stopping to talk to the workers and at other times sitting in one of the chairs. He seemed to be welcome, and was definitely not shooed out. The prices of the foods and drinks are regular for the area, I actually had a meal since I came in the afternoon, and it was good (meatloaf with mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. They have wifi but not on Saturday mornings (before 2:30pm) to make room for the brunch crowd. The only thing that didn't work for me: their french toast is cinnamon with a bit of toast on it :-)

love a coffee shop/bookstore vibe and that they provide meals to the community, based on donations from customers. the breakfast sandwich was delish because the BISCUT was to die for. so soft and fluffy and perfect breakfast bite

Nice atmosphere overall, though the music was a bit too loud for a nice reading atmosphere. Coffee and food could both have been better.Kid-friendliness: Lots of family- and kid-friendly books to purchase.

Super cute cafe, great service and drinks. Got the masala chai and it was delicious! Not sure how often they do live music but they had it when I went on a Sunday morning. Definitely will be coming back!

I was in DC visiting a couple girlfriends and this is one of their usual haunts. We walked and grabbed some morning coffees. I ordered the iced chai with oatmilk and also tried the goat cheese and honey biscuit. The biscuit was FANTASTIC. The atmosphere is very inviting and welcoming, and so was the barista taking our order. Such a cute place!

I went there on a recent vacation. Their breakfast sandwich is amazing and it rivals the one at Elle. (At Elle I had it without meat - at Potter's I had the egg-and-cheddar with turkey sausage) I also enjoyed sitting in there and of course browsing the book selections. Their staff seems nice too. This place is great. The only thing I wished for was that they had longer hours (and open on Mondays) but other than that, no complaints at all.

I started going to Potter's House about 6 years ago because they had a women's open mic every month and my best friend and I would go. It was the best! Unfortunately, they no longer do it but it was a beautiful community filled with awesome people wanting to encourage and inspire others. I've been back a handful of times since to browse their collection and/or to get a pastry and I love it. Their collection, despite being pretty small, is filled with the types of books I love to read- diverse and thoughtful. Their pastries are amazing and surprisingly well priced and I've never had a bad experience with their staff! They're funny and knowledgeable.

I love coffeeshops and this one might be my new favorite! It was the perfect setting to catch up with a friend and was exactly what we were looking for. It never got too loud and was very clean! The people who work here are the absolute sweetest, the books they've curated in the bookstore are perfect, the food (breakfast burrito) is filling, and the drinks (chai and iced coffee) are great. The prices are reasonable and they have a wide range of books. They have some outdoor seating and plenty of indoor seating. The amazing (radical hospitality) that they demonstrate in the community is wonderful and I loved learning about all the impactful work that they do. Potter's House feels like such a staple of the community and I only regret that I don't live closer and can't go all the time. My friend and I kept saying that Potter's reminded us a lot of our favorite Charlottesville coffeshop because it felt so cozy and like it was made to be a gathering place for old friends. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Awesome book store and amazingly friendly staff. The food and coffee are both delicious, and the inside and outside areas are dog friendly. My dog and I love coming here!

Loved the atmosphere here, who wouldn't enjoy sipping coffee among beautiful book displays? I highly recommend the biscuits here - that made a simple egg and cheese breakfast sandwich into a heavenly meal.

Stopped in here on a long drive. It was very worthwhile, the staff is super friendly. I got the chicken salad sandwich and the tea of the day and it was incredibly good. Lots of good smells. The store has plenty of interesting books to browse and a little community area while you're waiting for your drink and good
