SO cool. You'll enjoy it no matter what as a unique piece of old Florida history, but you'll get plenty of extra out of it if you've read Shadow Country or Killing Mr. Watson. Ask the staff to tell you more about the store--they're very knowledgeable!

My husband read all about the interesting history of Chokoloskee before we visited this historic little museum & store. Neat treasures to be found here!

This place is a total gem for history enthusiasts or anyone who likes looking around at antique oddities. This area in general feels so remote and special and has all kinds of fascinating history (we also did the Smallwood Store's boat tour, which was guided by Gary, whose family has lived in the area for generations - my favorite part of my 10 day Florida vacation which included Miami and the Keys!). The store has such a great old wooden smell and feel, with a lovely breeze coming through it off the water. I spent over an hour thoroughly intrigued with all there was to look at. It was a thrill to get to go to one of Florida's former (and current?) most remote places and learn about the history of the people who made a living out of life on the edge.If this information was useful, I would appreciate a quick like or follow, please. Thank you! :)

The store is something history lovers should see. It's definitely unique. I. The day we visited, the woman at the desk was actually part of the Smallwood family, which was great. She knew first hand the answer to any questions anyone might have. The admission price was $5, which we felt should be free, but people pay it, and we were still interested enough to pay it ourselves. We climbed up to the 2nd floor and walked through the open air general store. The doors on each side were open and there was a nice breeze through the store. We noticed the open windows had no screens. We saw no insects either, so the ventilation was welcome. There is a video on the history of the store visitors can watch near the back of the store that is interesting. How the little wood framed store like this fared during hurricanes amazed me. For anyone that doesn't want to pay the admission to go up the steps to the general store, the outside grounds are open to explore, including the underside of the store. Folks under 6' should be able to walk around without ducking. There is a food truck next to the building serving pretty good barbeque and tables under the store to sit at with a view of the water and the other 9,999 islands in the area.

Just know it's not a store, it's a museum. If you are into south Florida history you will think it's interesting.

A rustic landmark heavily laden with history and steeped in Americana. Well worth the trek Chokaloskee to tour the week managed and curated museum. A profuse exhibit of nostalgia and artifacts. This destination chronicles the history of this part of Florida in a detailed visual experience. Many, many great photo opportunities and views. Take the time to visit and experience this museum for yourself. Very well done & KUDOS to the staff at Ted Smallwood's Store!!!

While we were spending the night in Everglades City, one of the locals recommended we visit the Smallwood Store. It was pouring rain, so I didn't take any pics. There is a $5.00 fee to tour the museum/store. My Son & I were the only people there, so we had the place to ourselves. Lots of history, with old artifacts, photographs & newspaper stories. I really enjoyed my time there. Definitely worth a stop!!

A great little out of the way place to stop off at. It's $5 entry fee to walk into the building that is filled with so much rich history. There's so many antiques that it's hard to take it all in. Underneath the building is a little BBQ trailer. Dad got the mullet and I got the BBQ chicken sandwich. Portions are good and food was good, nothing to write home about but the atmosphere more than makes up for it.

Really interesting love the store and the history about the stone crabs, drug smugglers, the Indian traders and post office. Totally go out on a boat tour among the mangroves you go through tunnels and the dolphins come behind the boat and jump over the waves truly a great experience!
