After 2 months of the rental I am being charged $200 for tolls, I have added my personal transponder and activated via sunpass as added rental vehicle with plate number. and I paid all those tolls. This is ridiculous and I called Avis Margate about this, the guy on the phone said he will contact me back it has been 2 days nobody is helping. I called again, noone is picking up the phone. I don’t do reviews like this usually but this is not right!

🚨 AVIS Margate, FL – A Rental Nightmare 🚨
I normally don’t do posts like this, but my experience with Avis Car Rental in Margate, Florida has been nothing short of a disaster from the start, and I feel compelled to share.
📅 Reservation Scheduled for Tuesday, 10 AM:
I booked a vehicle in advance, drove 35-45 minutes to the Margate location, only to be told there were no cars available. When I asked why I wasn’t contacted beforehand, I was met with silence. The staff admitted they saw my reservation, yet chose not to inform me — a complete disregard for my time and money.
☎️ I was told to “just keep calling throughout the day” to see if anything became available. Why should I call around all day if I have a confirmed reservation?
🚗 Finally Got a Car — Then the Issues Got Worse:
The very next day, I had to put air in the tire three separate times. I returned to the location, explained the issue, and was told by the rep Alex to go patch or replace the tire on my own dime, and they’d reimburse me if I brought back a receipt.
I also told Alex that the brakes were causing the car to shake and feel like it might shut off, and his response?
“Well, don’t press the brakes then, brotha”
...followed by a laugh.
When I pressed him about how unsafe that sounded, he shrugged and said “I don’t know thats not my issue.” I asked for corporate contact information and was simply handed a standard Avis brochure and told me they arent going to do anything for me either — no help, no empathy, just dismissal.
🛑 Then the Car Literally Died:
Two days later, while heading toward the highway, I tapped the brakes and the car completely shut off. I was stranded in traffic with cars blaring their horns behind me.
Roadside assistance finally arrived, and I called for a tow at 5 PM. The tow truck didn’t show up until after 9:30 PM, leaving me stuck in the dark for about 4.5 hours.
🚘 Sunday – Another Dead End:
The next day, I tried to get a replacement vehicle and was shut down again. Since I was near the airport, I even went to Avis’s airport location, thinking they could help. They refused, telling me I had to go back to the original Margate location because the contract was still open under the car that broke down.
So, despite being left stranded and carless, Avis still refused to provide a solution.
⛔ It’s Now Monday at 5 PM:
I’ve been told I still can’t get a replacement vehicle because the contract is “still open” and Avis has not yet received the car back from their own tow company. How is that my fault? Why am I being penalized for a car that broke down after I flagged the issue?
💳 My card is still on file, the contract is still open, and I’m left without a car or resolution. Avis Margate, this entire experience has been unprofessional, unsafe, and flat-out disrespectful to paying customers.
I expected better.

Rented a car from them and the battery died. I didn’t leave the lights on or anything. Clearly this car was not properly serviced. And they still had the nerve to charge me the full price for the vehicle. Will never use Avis again.

Made appointment over a month ago. We confirmed 2 days before. When went in to get the van today and they didn’t have the van. We told them we have 7 passengers so it was important to have this vehicle. This is the second year in a row this has happened. I called Enterprise down the street and they had 5 Vans to choose from. Very disappointed in Avis. They use to be reliable.

BEWARE!!! AVOID AVIS RENTAL IF YOU CAN. FIRST OF ALL THE CARS ARE TRASH COMPARED TO HERTZ RENTAL THE CAR THAT I HAD WAS ROACH INFESTED, AND THE CLEANING WAS VERY POOR! SO THE SERVICE THAT I RECEIVED FROM THE EMPLOYEES AT THIS LOCATION, THE OVERALL RENTAL EXPERIENCE WAS A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE! THEY TELL YOU TO GET YOUR OWN SUNPASS AND YES, STILL FIND WAYS TO CHARGE YOU OUTSIDE OF THE SUNPASS. I HAD MY CAR FOR ABOUT THREE MONTHS AND EVERY OTHER WEEK THERE WAS A CHARGE FOR DIFFERENT AMOUNT FOR TOLLS FROM AVIS TO MY CREDIT CARD. THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT THE SUNPASS TOLL READER DID NOT PICK UP THE SUNPASS FOR CERTAIN TIME AND THAT YOU HAVE TO SUBMIT YOUR TOLL STATEMENT EACH TIME FOR EACH WEEK SHOWING TOLLS. THIS IS THE ONLY RENTAL COMPANY THAT HAS THIS TYPE OF SCAM FOR UBER DRIVERS MAYBE EVEN FOR REGULAR RENTALS AS WELL. I RETURNED THEIR CAR ALMOST A MONTH AGO AND MY CREDIT CARD IS STILL BEING CHARGED FOR TOLLS! Also, the Chevy bolt electric is trash. It is the first car that they offer you as far as electric choice as well as trading if you want a better selection of cars which are much cleaner and well kept don’t go to Avis. It took me to have to go to another rental car company for me to truly see that this company is really the bottom of the barrel for rideshare!

This place has always done right by me. If you have any issues with Alex and his staff, then I suggest you pull out a mirror and you might find the root of the problem. They provide the best service for all customers that allow them the opportunity to do their jobs. I would recommend that you make any reservations early to have the best experience. This has been my go to place for years, and that will continue.

Guys I would suggest not to do business with Avis cause on my side they’ve been overcharging me and nobody from customer service knows where the charge comes from while on my bank statement it shows that it is from Avis, I even tried to get help at this location where I got the car from and they only see the current charge they are supposed to charge me with every week. My weekly charge is $ 323.64. Starting on july 22nd, 2024 they started overcharging me. They overcharged me $22.87 on that day and I received back on July 27th $16.18. On July 29th, 2024 they overcharged me $ 137.22. Here are the proofs.
