the Maritime Hammock Sanctuary holds such a diverse layout of landscapes. there is an open-sand gopher tortoise playground amidst a flower garden of fiery red sage, periwinkles, and beach sunflowers. there is a hardwoods hammock with bunnies, squirrels, and butterflies. there are several mangroves with crabs, white and blue, great land and ghost beach. there are several muddy areas, each a little different, some with frogs or lizards or earthworms, each muddier than the last. the ponds and sloughs have (long-necked) soft-shelled turtles, gators, and fish and the lagoon has dolphin passers-by and maybe manatees. a lot to see if your lucky in such a small parcel, really. all kinds of birds. and, THE Great Blue Land Crab!!!

Decided to give this place one more chance.... This time at 1 pm, in a Tuesday, no rain recently and sprayed ourselves down with the good mosquito spray BUT to no avail.Made it a short way down and the mosquitoes where just bouncing off, getting in your ears, eyes, etc....just terrible.Highly DO NOT recommend, county really needs to do something about this otherwise just not enjoyable at all. This was our last attempt at doing this trail ?

This is a fairly level, easy walk. Best to do it in the cooler months.Very beautiful scenery, wide variety of wildlife. Can't suggest this enough. If you like the outdoors, you have to visit Archie Carr

This location is one of the best birding spots in Brevard County, though it is difficult because of the thick vegetation. It can also range from very few mosquitoes to extremely high numbers. There are a lot of birds present during migration if you’re willing to work for them. It is one of my top four locations.

Nice hiking area with lots of shade to beat the heat. Be warned...the mosquitoes are literally out for blood. Don't forget the bug repellent!!

Really lovely flora and fauna. Visited in late January and plenty of mosquitoes about. Even managed to see an alligator in its natural environment. The total trail around the sanctuary took just under 2 hrs with a leisurely pace.

Maritime Hammock Sanctuary is located on A1A in Melbourne Beach, Florida. There are several hiking trails with native plants, a creek, palms, ferns, live oaks and more to enjoy. There are several benches to sit & rest. Trails connect to Indian River Lagoon. You might see an alligator or ducks. It is fairly level walking....no hills at all. No bikes nor pets permitted. You might need bug sprayLots of skeeters.

A really nice walk located on south A1A. About 1 to 2 miles depending on chosen route. Some ponds with gators and birds. Nice vegetation including wild orchids at times, wild coffee and gumbo limbo trees. Pretty well marked. You shouldn't get lost. No dogs or bikes allowed.

Very beautiful place. Trails are easy to walk. Bug spay is needed in some places if you don’t want to get swarmed. Even with bug spray I got bitten. I saw some large gators in the ponds. Also saw a large snapping turtle and a tortoise. But the trees and plants are what make this so beautiful and worth the time here.
