Place always closes early, way prior to the 5:00 pm posted closing time and many items are available on Amazon for less.Also, shop owner turned customers at both doors away tonight at 4:45 pm. I guess we’ll shop Amazon since they keep their stop open past 4:30 pm and treat customers better.

Cute store just off of main square in Mt. Dora. It is laid out in a manor that allowed us to shop with our children and stroller in tow. Fridge with drinks also provided much needed refreshment as we continued our walk. Staff was friendly, we will return.

Checkered Moon is by far my favorite store in Mt. Dora! They have the cutest gifts to fit anything you’re looking for home, baby, you name it. Sharon and Susan aim to please and are always so helpful every time I stop by to shop. Next time you’re in Mt. Dora make sure to shop here and you won’t be disappointed! Disregard the negative reviews - I’ve never had a bad experience at Checkered Moon and can’t say enough great things about the ladies of the store and shop.

On a steamy hot day, I came in with my very young daughter because I shop here often and recalled they had a small refrigerator with drinks. We were really in need of water. I walked in and grabbed one. When I got to the counter, the woman wouldn’t sell it to me. She asked if I had cash, then told me “I’d really like to have a bigger purchase because it’ll charge us for such a small sale.”Are you serious? I’m standing with my baby, sweating, and you want me to spend more money in your store, which we “used to” shop regularly in. I say “used to” because you’ve lost a customer over that water.I was appalled at the fact that you were more worried about your bottom line than allowing an obviously hot parent and child grab a bottle of water and cool down.You said “yeahhhh sorry” and let me go put the bottle back into the fridge and walk back outside sweating.The same lady that’s always running the place every single time I’ve shopped there.Shame on your morals.

People down rating this place have no idea what they're talking about. I see most of the negative reviews are from a year ago when a lot of people were fighting over masks/no masks. The team at Checkered Moon is always informed and up to date with CDC guidelines--nothing more, nothing less. Some people need to be a little more gentle with their reviews in such challenging, emotional times. These women are freaking awesome at what they do and their product is phenomenal. Walking in their shop will surely brighten your day with its atmosphere.

I’m a local and have been to this shop on more than one occasion. I’ve had wonderful experiences and the shop is bursting with positivity! I always find gifts for people I cherish here and will continue to go there for unique gifts. I also like their clothing. ☺️

It seems to me the woman that runs the store does not appreciate customers of all sizes. We were there with our inquisitive 4 year old who loves shopping, and usually buys something, because we can afford to do so. The woman told my daughter not to touch anything. We felt rushed...Then she closed the store for 15 min. I’ve seen her do this in another occasion to another group with kids.

Adorable little gift shop on the heart of the Mount Dora Marketplace! You'll find fun gifts, clothing, books, chotskies, and more in the bright and colorful shop. This also includes unique gifts for kids and babies that would be perfect for a baby shower, etc. a little something for everyone here. The woman working greeted us when we came in and was friendly an engaging as we were checking out the goodies. I really enjoyed this place!

Was asked to wear a mask in the store days after phase 3 began. This store needs to educate their staff and get with the program. Will not be returning.

What an adorable shop with the best items. Staff was extremely friendly so I assume they took care of whatever issue they had before per other older reviews. Definitely give it a try!

Bottom Line: I loved everything in here!! The 2 ladies working the day we stopped in were very gracious hosts. There were so many cute cocktail napkins with snarky sayings, unique artwork, kitchen towels with more funny sayings. Jewelry, t-shirts and great hostess gifts. Definitely on my "sure to go back to" list.

I was here today with my family after walking by the store and seeing some really cool looking items, particularly a pineapple lamp made in Spain for $92. I had recently been in another store in the same area (under the Cherry Blossoms) where I was invited (unprompted) by the sales lady to take pictures in her store and she even took a picture of me in the store. It was a really cool store. Anyway after having that great experience I took a picture in this store and was promptly scolded by the sales lady in front of my family with a long lecture about how although she doesn't have a sign up asking patrons not to take pics, it still wasn't allowed, blah blah blah, on and on. So, I can only share a pic of the outside. I think she finally realized how unfriendly she sounded (yes, I apologized, but couldn't get a word in edgewise to tell her I'd delete it) She tried to change the mood as we walked toward the door and offered us a visitor map of the area. We left the store promptly. We loved the selection of items in the store, but she could have walked over to me and spoken more privately instead of scolding me so publicly. I had no issues with her request, just her delivery. I won't be going back. She embarrassed me and I meant no harm and had no ill intentions to use the picture inappropriately.
