Authentic Trini food. Must visit when in south

Had some friends come in town and wanted to take me to a local Trinidadian spot for some home style food. When we got there music was over powering and it was very dark. It is set up like a cabin with a lot of wooden fixtures but kept dark apparently for the atmosphere but was too dark to see food well. We sat at a table but we were told we had to go in the line. As soon as we got up we lost our table but we were able to secure another one. The lady behind the counter spoke really rushed when we were trying to pick our items. She had a very unfriendly demeanor which made us uncomfortable so we just picked something quickly. I did ask for pholourie, one of my favorite Trinidad treats, but she said they don’t sell that there. She told us she would make our orders and to wait there in the line. After about 5 minutes the line started to pile up and another lady asked what we were waiting for. We said the First Lady told us to stand here. They spoke to each other and the First Lady said we can go sit and she will bring our food. We didn’t wait long, she came out maybe 5 minutes later and brought our food. As she was walking away I asked for utensils and napkins. She said we had to go and get them ourselves. We realized that we didn’t order any drinks and it was not offered. But we were so rattled from the ordering experience we just ate our food dry. I ordered roti with curry chicken, pumpkin and spinach. The spinach was way too sweet and in fact sweeter than the pumpkin. The pumpkin was just okay. The roti skin however was soft and well made. The curry chicken was also very good. It’s a shame that I live nearby and this could have been a new go to spot for me but I don’t think I will return. This unfortunately feeds into the stereotype that Caribbean restaurants give the worse customer service.

I felt transported to Trinidad from the moment I stepped foot into the restaurant. I happened to visit on a very crowded Saturday afternoon and was in a rush, so I couldn’t wait for the kitchen to make roti, but I had the chance to try the doubles. These were perfectly made and come two to an order. Thankfully, I was splitting the meal because one double is plenty. I opted for everything on top and slight pepper - that came out perfectly. For an entree, I shared the curry goat and rice (the kitchen was out of roti at the time) with dal. The curry goat was piping hot, tender, and seasoned well. We happened to nab a table just as some folks were leaving. It was so nice to see a wide variety of people at the restaurant. I am already looking forward to my next visit!

The reason to go here is not for the scenery, the sumptuous dining area, or silver service but for well prepared authentic Trini food. The selection is a bit wider than several other roti shops...trini chinee food, macaroni pie etc.I had the strimp dhalphourie that was soft and fluffy with generous amounts of shrimp, and seasoned to perfection. The three other Trinis I was with also agreed that the food was excellent.Prices we felt were very reasonable.Seating area is a little limited, especially if you get there at a busy time. But this more PF Singhs than PF Changs- so what do you expect!I will definitely go back, and that is about as high as a recommendation that I can offer.

The doubles and aloo pie are some of the best I have had in the US in genera. Soft and light Bara with flavorful channa. The aloo pie is thin and crispy. Everything is hot and tastyHubby had the curry chicken and loved it.Their homemade ice cream are also very delicious, particularly the coconut flavor.Highly recommend for authentic trini fare.

Such an amazing experience from the moment my family and I walked through the front door. Welcoming atmosphere, timely service, great prices, authentic and tasty food! Visited Tabanka from Washington, DC and this became the highlight of my trip to Florida! Will soon be back to visit with even more family and friends! Anna and the team made us feel like home!
