Buying at CarMax was not an easy experience at all. We were waiting on a check in the mail to come so we visited the places several different times to pick out a car we liked. So there is a guy named Dwayne that works there that basically threatened to call the cops on us if test drove the car for more than 20 minutes. You didn't have to be rude about it. All you needed to do was just say please bring the car back in 20 minutes. No need to make threats to your potential customers. We finally found a car we liked and had our down payment and made the deal or so we thought. Someone at CarMax mixed up our social security numbers and we had to go back to CarMAX and sit there for another 2 hours (4 hours total including the first time) at CarMax had to buy the car back and then sell it to us again.
The manager offered us a $20 meal to make up for the 4 hours i had to sit there and wait for them to make another deal. I had to come there and bring him a receipt if I wanted that. How about send me a gift card instead of inconveniencing me again and have me driving to the dealership. One more thing, CarMax will ding your credit and shop your Credit score around to 5 to 10 different potential lenders. Thanks for all the credit dings. The one good thing about that place is there are no salesman there. The people that work there do not get a commission so you don't have anyone following you around the car lot like a lost puppy dog. I would have liked to give this place a good review but there was too many things that went wrong with my experience. Hopefully you will have a better one.
I would like to thank Chris, Jamie and Marvin for helping us out. Marvin knows more about cars than anyone I ever met. Chris helped us out the first time and he was great. A really nice guy to deal with and that was all I wanted. Jamie helped us out when we had to go back and he was really friendly also.
One last tip to the people that work at CarMax. Don't tell your customers you might have to call the cops on them just because they are test driving your car.
CarMax has your driver license and insurance. Also you are tracking the car. No need to be a bully about a test drive. I never had a dealership tell me that if your gone for a certain amount of time I'm going to have to call someone you won't like (The Police). Rude and uncalled for!

Update. It has been over a week since purchase and still no phone call to set up appointments for service for detail and scratch repair.
Our experience with the sales representative was great: he was kind, thorough and understanding.
The vehicle itself is another story. They brought the vehicle to test drive just filthy inside and out. We asked the car to be cleaned, but that was a joke. There was still crumbs, dog hair, etc from prior owner. They did offer an amount to assist with detailing the vehicle, but why not cleaned beforehand?
The vehicle needs some minor repais with scratches, why was this not fixed before selling, have to come back for a service appointment? Why was the vehicle not detailed and the filth taken care of and scratches fixed, before telling us ready for sell? But, now inconvenient to figure out how to come back for service appointments?

Update since theres no reply area. They respond to these reviews like they care and will fix it. Don't buy the nonsense. I have called many of times with no resolution. My name is on this review it tells them my name which this particular store knows very well and they absolutely 100% know my number I even texted Jason's cell at service as told over the weekend with no response about it before this review. This place sucks and they refuse any real solution as of today 2/24/25 I get to pay $400 for a rental over this because of problems it was having while under the 90 day warranty they claimed to fix. For sure will be taking it to court 100% total bs, shame on this company:
Original review was 2/22/25:
I strongly advise against purchasing a vehicle from Carmax without a thorough inspection by an independent mechanic. My experience demonstrates their advertised 125-point inspection is inadequate, at best. I bought my car in May, and by June, it was in the shop. Carmax kept it for a month, claiming to have fixed a charcoal filter issue supposedly fixing it. However, the same problems recurred in July, and yet again in August, shortly after which two tires nearly came off while I was driving. I was fortunate to find a nearby Goodyear, but the incident was terrifying. Throughout this ordeal, I was stuck with a dirty rental car, an added expense and inconvenience.
After the tire incident, the car returned to the shop, only to exhibit shaking problems upon its return. The service manager even admitted it seemed like I had a lemon and offered a replacement. While I appreciated the offer, the proposed replacement, a Hyundai Santa Fe, was significantly smaller than my needs, especially with three teenagers and a stepson. I explained this to the manager, who promised to explore other options. Unfortunately, I never heard back from him.
From mid-October to early December, my work schedule prevented me from pursuing the issue. When I contacted Carmax again in January, the manager was consistently unavailable. Despite messages left, he never returned my calls. Eventually, I contacted corporate, who claimed to have fixed the car and even replaced the tires (which Goodyear had identified as rotten). However, the problems persisted. The last time Carmax touched the car was September, and I haven't heard from them since. Even a coworker's attempt to contact the manager on my behalf was unsuccessful.
I then escalated the matter to the resolutions department, where I encountered dismissive and unhelpful customer service. Despite the near-catastrophic tire incident, Carmax offered no real solutions, simply suggesting I use my Carmax Care plan and pay out of pocket for repairs – for the same recurring issues. They promised reimbursement, but it never materialized. Their only alternative was the unsuitable, smaller Hyundai Santa Fe, which I had already experienced during previous repairs.
My experience with Carmax has been incredibly frustrating and even dangerous. Their advertised inspection is a joke, their customer service is appalling, and they have repeatedly failed to resolve the issues with my vehicle. I am now pursuing legal action, as have many others who have encountered similar problems with their deceptive practices, particularly regarding the 125-point inspection. I urge potential customers to do their research and consider alternative dealerships. While I understand the temptation due to financial constraints, my experience demonstrates the potential risks involved. Do your due diligence and protect yourself.

TL;DR:
Every time I set an appointment it disappeared from their system, and both times I came in (purchase, service) it took HOURS for what should have been straightforward processes.
Bought a car from here recently, and also brought it in for service (minor details, nothing bad).
We ordered a car to this carmax and received a text message and email stating it was ready to be seen and purchased. We set an appointment and called on the way to verify it was ACTUALLY available to not waste the 40mi drive over, and were told it is ready.
Once we arrive, we are told there is no appointment on the books for us, but they'll get us put in. Once we're called up (not too long after) we are told that the car is in fact NOT ready to be seen or purchased because it has maintenance problems to fix prior to sale. (paint, minor) Weird, since we were told multiple times it was ready for sale. We get the OK to go view it in the back lot and do so uneventfully, though we were told we wouldn't be able to test drive the car since it was on a maintenance hold. Sure, fine, whatever. It's a low mileage reliable car with no red flags in it's history.
We sit down, I'd filled out everything online that I could to speed up the process to hopefully get us home quickly. I guess that was pointless, because the sales rep helping us had to hand jam basically everything.
Of note, we arrived at 530pm, at this point it is probably 630pm and we're just starting paperwork.
Almost every step of the way there are hangups, but we finally make it to the purchase part. To be fair, I should have checked if carmax took cards, but when I tried to put it on my Amex card, I am told they don't take cards in any capacity. I understand why that would be, but i didn't prepare to finance this car.
Probably 730pm by now, but whatever. Financing generates tons of new hitches, to include the need to NOT have a deductible over 2k. I could afford a 2k deductible, so I chose that when setting up the gap insurance the finance institution required. Would have been nice to be told to avoid doing that. Ended up having to call my ins provider to have them fix it because they don't allow multiple online changes to policy within 24h.
We eventually were able to purchase the vehicle and walk out, being handed a physically broken but electronically functional Key fob and an IOU to repair the paint and replace the fob.it's 845pm. Of note, we were left alone for 10 minutes at a time frequently throughout this process.
3h 15min to buy a car I filled out all the paperwork beforehand online, and brought a transfer registration. And left alone to sit 10mins at a time, all the time. Great experience. :|
Then I made the mistake of going back for the paint and fob maintenance.
I go back, and once again my appointment has seemingly disappeared from their system, sweet. Quickly sorted but I'm not handing off my keys until 10 min after my scheduled appointment time. Paint takes a while, that I understand and don't contest. But I was unable to see what they even did after the 3h. I assume color matched paint was made up and touched to the bumper where the blemishes were. Unfortunately that didn't do anything at all visually. For the fob they replaced the frame and re-cut the backup key which was missing on purchase. I was under the impression from our terrible first experience that they would be replacing the fob entirely, but I guess not. So much for having 2 fobs.
I will be avoiding all contact with this carmax if I can in the future though I still haven't received my physical title after paying off the car so I guess I'll be forced to at least speak with them to sort out the title situation.
The employees were nice, though maybe not all truly competent.
It seems buyin

So frustrated. We love carmax but I was given a quote on my car that wasn't honored. Feel cheated and lied to. Won't be back. One star Is too much

It took too long for the transfer of my car to get to the CarMax near me. When I inquired about it I just got the run around. I was made to feel like they had all the power and that there was nothing I could do about it. Delays and excuses was all I got.

Had a 5:30 appointment to sell my vehicle to CarMax. At 7 o'clock the appraisal was still in verification status. Salesmen really tried to rectify situation to no avail. Something about network of carmax's . Left at that time . Too hard to take off work and come back another day.

If I could give a zero, I would give two zeros…… most disrespectful encounter I’ve ever had. I was put on hold for over an hour with nothing ever done about my issue…… very unprofessional!!!!

Let me just tell you about this place! You must know this before you shop Here! These Guys are awesome! There’s no haggling the staff is super nice. You have 10 days to return your purchase if you are not satisfied. And 90 days if you have any mechanical issues. We had an issue with one of our tires when we purchased the vehicle. Took it to the dealership to have it replaced. And they covered it no problem. But they found that that the other tires were still good. But we’re a little old. And instead of just replacing one bad tire they did all four. So far in my purchase they have been better than there word on taking care of any issues you find. I’m super happy with them. And highly recommend them. And will definitely be a long time customer.

Daz was extremely professional and took very good care of us from the moment we walked in the door. He did not pressure us into extra things we did not want, and listened wholeheartedly to the purpose of our visit. Daz is exceptional at his work and we are very thankful to him for allowing our car buying process to go smoothly.

I couldn't have had a better experience here! Anthony helped me trade-in and buy the car of my dreams! He couldn't have been any nicer and confident in what he knows. Pablo was a wonderful addition to the process and was a massive help as well. I highly recommend if you want a car, do it with CarMax, and if you can, Pensacola CarMax. 10/10 experience ⭐️
