“We stumbled upon this house purely by chance while walking by, and it turned out to be such an incredible experience. This place is filled with deep history, and I highly recommend taking the guided tour. Walking through the house while listening to its story was truly captivating.
What makes this house even more unique is that it has always been operated by women. Back in the day, when women couldn’t work and many were in need, this house provided a way for them to work together and earn a living. Remarkably, it is still run by women today, who care for the house and preserve its legacy.
The house originally belonged to a famous doctor, and it was his granddaughter who left it to the city. Inside, there are two floors to explore, and every piece of furniture and decor is original. The authenticity and attention to detail are simply stunning, making the history come alive as you walk through the rooms.
My child and I were both deeply impressed by how beautifully everything is organized. Before leaving, we couldn’t resist taking home a small souvenir—places like this are too special to leave without bringing a piece of their story with you.
What’s even more inspiring is that the house operates on a donation-based system. You pay what you feel is appropriate, which adds to its unique charm. Before leaving, you can sign the guestbook, making you feel like a part of its history.
This magical place left a lasting impression on us, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a treasure that shouldn’t be missed!”

“This place is so much more than a canteen for veterans and civilians. Yes, the beer is as cold as it gets, the food is southern homestyle amazing, the service, friendly and efficient - but it's much more that sets this organization apart. For 20+ years, they have run a free, comprehensive, after school tutoring and enrichment program and summer camp for at risk children. 'The Legion', as the locals call it, is the heart of the community. It's where people gather after funerals, for a repast. It's where community leaders meet to plan ways of bettering the lives of their neighbors, and celebrate the successes of one another. It's where baby showers and wedding receptions, anniversaries and birthdays are celebrated. I've never seen an organization more involved in bettering the community that AL Post 194. I've never met a warmer or more genuine group of people. Book their hall for your event, or stop by for some delicious homestyle eats. They're also on Facebook, so you can see what the specials are.”
