“I recently had the incredibly good fortune of being introduced to Sporting Clays through an afternoon lesson with John Woolley. It had been quite some time since I had fired a shotgun, and I was feeling a little anxiety about the lesson. John’s approach was friendly and casual. I could tell from the jump that the experience was going to be fun.

John’s teaching method is very similar to a life drawing class. Eliminating variables like stance and mount while emphasizing focus through observation. In a life drawing class, the student begins by tracing the outline of their subject with their eyes while attempting to follow with their shoulder and hand. They do not look at their paper, that part, the “drawing” part just happens. Not well at first, but improvement comes surprisingly quickly if the instructor can reinforce it. Before too long, the student has developed a direct connection between their eyes and their hand. If they can maintain it through practice, beautiful works may follow.

John manages this same sort of magic. In an afternoon he was able to show me how to find that connection and tap into it by focusing on the “bird” and letting the shooting happen.

What initially seemed challenging to the point of impossible became intuitive, simultaneously relaxing and exciting. John’s method works. And it’s fun.”

“Their service is outstanding! They have a great selection of modern and older firearms. They generally have something new or interesting every time I've gone in and I have enjoyed chatting with them quite a bit. I dropped off a slightly challenging project for them recently and can't say exactly how it will turn out, but the gunsmith knew what they were talking about and said that he could get it fixed. They are also the only gun store that I contacted that was willing to order AR-10 gas rings for me so I didn't have to spend a ridiculous amount on shipping! I've also sold a gun on a consignment with them and the process was very easy. So far it's been a pleasure to use them as my main gun store/ gunsmith for stuff that I can't do myself.

Note for anyone that's going to sell their firearm on consignment. If you end up wanting to take the firearm back, you will have to do an additional background check. It's not that they want to do it, It's the law.”
