Firehall 4 Animal Hospital
815 Hawthorne Ave, AthensFirehall 4 is the best! The vets know all of my pets by name. I have pets who have had some issues, and Dr. Laas and Dr. Noellert have not only saved their lives, but they call/email whenever an issue comes up. They follow up and genuinely care about their patients. The entire Firehall team is great. They are kind, efficient, and caring. Kudos to Firehall!

Athens Animal Hospital
1400 N Chase St, AthensDr. Cown and his staff are great! They’ve gotten my pets in same day for emergencies. And Dr. Cown made a house call to put my 16 year old dog down, which was I’m so thankful for. I didn’t want to have to put him down in a strange place. It was nice to be in the comfort of our home. Prices are very reasonable, too.

2391 Daniells Bridge Rd, AthensI have three animals (2 dogs and a cat) that are patients of good hands. The team there is absolutely incredible. One of my dogs was diagnosed with lymphoma and it’s been extremely difficult but the amount of care and compassion the entire good hands team has given our dog as well as us is above and beyond my expectations. I’m so grateful to have them as partners in our animals health.

Gaines Shoal Animal Clinic
1860 Barnett Shoals Road Suite 108, AthensI cannot adequately express how thankful I am for Dr. Ellis & team for offering integrative options like acupuncture and alternative medical management for his suspected IVDD - AND keeping practivcality and his quality of life top of mind. He is a very happy, alert, and active dog, so it's been challenging and heartbreaking to watch his mobility suddenly decline. This team has spent way more time and energy with us than was expected/required to get to the root cause of the problem and manage his pain on a personalized level. They've also gone above and beyond discussing options, alternative therapies and going the extra mile to manage his condition with a variety of modalities. I can't thank them enough for their patience, expertise, research, open minded and personalized approach to his care plan. You all rock! Your compassion and open minded approach is much welcomed and needed in the community and will serve you and the pets who depend on you well. Grateful to have you here and on Tasers healthcare team!

Companion Animal Hospital
2000 US-29, AthensI went to Companion Animal Hospital a few years ago when I still lived in Athens. I originally changed vets because during covid, Companion was one of the only ones I could find that let me go back there for the exam with my very anxious dog. I went in for a typical wellness exam where she also got a few vaccines. As we were on our way out of the building, my dog started vomiting and getting very lethargic. I immediately went back into the building with her where the whole team there, led by Dr. Weaver, jumped into quick action. It turns out she had a very extreme anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine. Dr. Weaver did an INCREDIBLE job. While it was touch and go there for awhile, she ended up saving my sweet girls' life. Dr. Weaver knew the importance of my dog's bond with me, and even before my dog was entirely stable, she let me come to the back area and start talking to her, which they noticed really helped her. Dr. Weaver even let me stay back there with her until we could transport her to an animal hospital. Ultimately, my pup made a full recovery! I was SO appreciative of Dr. Weaver and her team. They were not only knowledgeable enough to save her life, but they also treated me so well during it and made sure I was able to be there with her. In our follow up appointments, they were all so grateful to see her alive and doing well, which made me know that they truly cared about her. I now live out of state and am looking for a new vet, which reminded me how hard it is to find a good one and how lucky I was to have Companion Animal Hospital during my time in Athens. I would highly recommend this vet to anyone in the area! They are so good at what they do and really do care about our pets. I'd go back there in a heartbeat!

There appears to be a really cute cat, taking care of things after hours I'm sure! There was a great selection of styles available when we visited and each were very well done: märzen, Irish red, hazy IPA, standard IPA and schwarzbier. The märzen had a lovely spice twist.

Creature Comforts Downtown Taproom and Brewery
271 W Hancock Ave, AthensBreweries are no longer uncommon, especially in lively and nuanced towns like Athens. So, to shine, breweries must have remarkable beer and a unique vibe. With a broad selection of high quality beer, dim lighting, and droning music, Creature Comforts checks all of these boxes. Being from out of town, I stumbled upon this place by asking a random student of UGA which brewery would be considered the ‘can’t miss’ spot in Athens. Without hesitation, he said Creature Comforts. Clearly, the students here have exceptional taste.

I am currently in a wheelchair due to a broken ankle and one of the vendors helped me into and out of the ladies room (I couldn't get over the threshold). We bought some beer to take home and will be back soon. We live about an hour and a half away

Jittery Joe's Coffee - Eastside
1860 S Barnett Shoals Rd, AthensJittery Joe's on the East Side helped me get through the Pandemic. I went there every morning and chatted with Paul. It literally helped me stay sane during that time. I still go there pretty much every day and the espresso Paul makes is my favorite I've ever had. It's basically become a part of my routine. I can't recommend this place enough, especially early in the morning. Many thanks.

Five and Ten
1073 S Milledge Ave, AthensThe setting of an old house is quaint. Not too stuffy but not too casual either. Parking was a little tight. We were sat right away with our reservation. 6:15 on a Monday, not too busy. The main dining room was a little chilly. We figured they were expecting more customers and it would warm up. Tables are metal legs with wooden tops, chairs were ok and everything was acceptably clean. The hostess was nice, we were given water and menus right away. Menus also included the happy hour specials and a list of bottle wine specials.Happy hour gimlet was good and the local lager was too.The charcuterie board was ok. We stretched it to feed 5. The Sun-choke jelly was ugly but de-li-cious!Our server was personable. We asked questions about the menu and various waitstaff members either could or unfortunately could not answer them. Our impression was that there wasn’t much of a ‘team work’ vibe happening.Beet salad okMushroom soup ok but needed a little kick of somethingThey were out of dumplings! We later found out that a large party of economic conference guests were sat in another room and we figured they were given dibs. We were offered extra sourdough bread which worked out as a good alternative for sopping up the juices. The trout okThe schnitzel was given a 9/10 from everyone who ordered it.We weren’t going to order dessert but because of the “no dumplings” and a late entree, we were comped and we ordered one of each. The lemon cake—needs work, tasted floury and heavyThe chocolate offering— too bitter but…the banana ice cream was amazingThe orange pavlova—-10/10! Best thing we ate—perfect treat. We enjoyed a leisurely very good meal and would recommend this restaurant for adult diners, date night, special occasion, or as a treat. There is outdoor/patio seating.
