About Oakland Cemetery
Historic Oakland Cemetery is Atlanta’s oldest public park and the final resting place of many of the City’s most noted citizens. It is one of Atlanta’s most essential and beautiful historical sites, offering far more than a typical resting place. The 48 acres are full of treasures – history and gardens, sculpture and architecture, ancient oaks and magnolias. It is a vivid and decorative garden landscape that complements the tombstones and mausoleums, like a vibrant extension of life. It is a wedding venue, a green space, an art gallery, a classroom, and a sanctuary against a city backdrop. The cemetery is a place to celebrate Atlanta’s rich and fascinating past and future, where important stories are still being told. This includes an area marked Slave Square, which depicts the evolving and unsettling story of those who were uprooted. It is a magical place of such beauty and peace, a must-see.

I attended Capturing the Spirit of Oakland for the first time and I found it to be incredible! During a time when so much of our history is being erased it was nice to know that important stories are still being told. Highly recommend everyone go and enjoy this event.

Historic cemetery with impressive statues and gardens. Peaceful walk, though parking was limited.
