About Our House

Our House is a shelter and nonprofit organization that provides services and assistance, particularly to families with infant children. Experiences vary significantly between residents and volunteers. For residents, the experience can be profoundly positive or difficult. Many describe it as life-changing, with beautiful, condo-like rooms that foster a sense of home and independence. Staff are frequently described as loving, great, helpful, devoted, dedicated, nice, and concerned, providing critical support that leads to housing and stability. However, some staff members have been noted as incredibly rude, with cruel comments directed at residents. A particularly disheartening policy during the pandemic involved threatening to kick out residents who tested positive for COVID-19, which was viewed as a cruel way to handle a life-and-death situation. The consensus among residents is that the program requires hard work and a commitment to bettering oneself; it is not a handout or a motel, and success depends on putting in the effort. For volunteers, the experience is overwhelmingly positive. Volunteering is considered a great experience where one can make a difference and see the effect of their work. Volunteers meet great, passionate people among both staff and other volunteers and highly recommend the opportunity. The shelter operates with strict rules and serves people from all different walks of life. While some find the staff at this and similar organizations to be cruel, others find them incredibly receptive to those who are actively helping themselves.
