I don't know how anyone would give this a 5/5 stars.
Easily the worst hotel I've ever stayed in for the price.
They didn't offer any service.
Floors were dirty.
Wall paper peeling off the walls.
Vents to outside have gaps and you can see daylight.
Mouse traps next to refrigerators are a bad sign.

We paid additional resort fee for continental breakfast, bad quality water bottle and maybe a free welcome drink. The continental breakfast is terrible. All you get is one type of bread, orange, tea and coffee. There clearly have no enough servers to clean the table and provide more food. Bread is constantly out as well as the hot water for tea.

Rooms are fairly nice, beds are a little small, but a good location by the water and the Japanese garden along with short drive to get to downtown Hilo. Breakfast is okay, they do have occasionally some delicious baked goods, but if you like oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar, then you're good.

I will start with the positive sides. The room was clean. The view from the balcony was awesome. The view was of the bay even though it says the ocean view, but we preferred the view of the bay. The balcony was pretty large as well. There was no problem with parking and the location is great. Unfortunately, there are more downsides than this specifically considering the price of $250 per night, including tax and fees. First of all, even though the exterior is renovated and clean, the rooms are very outdated. It's dirty and not maintained. They desperately need to renovate. The included breakfast like other people have mentioned reminded me of my school days where we stayed in cheap motels. The front desk staff were not rude per se, but were not really courteous as well. However, the service staff were really friendly and happy to be there. I think it is a great idea to do the basic housekeeping ourselves, especially if it will help with the cost, but it wasn't a good sight to see. Early in the morning, the hallway was filled with trash bags from each room and some of them were very smelly. And finally we didn't dare to turn on the central air as the vents were disgusting, so please make sure to check that before you turn it on

Great hotel. Good prices, nice staff. Cont breakfast. Clean rooms and fast WiFi. A TV that I can connect to my computer. Lots of people, families with kids and couples staying here. 10 out of 10 would stay at the Hilo Hawaiian again!

I don't know where to start, probably the rude receptionist that checked us in that gave us attitude. The room constantly reeks like damp wet carpets . Then there was an ant crawling on the bed. The surfaces like tables are dusty like they've never been cleaned, chairs are stained as well. The aircon is weak and is very noisy. And there's no room service unless requested for each day either, absolutely subpar experience.
The type of room we booked wasn't even the room we got.
The only good things are the view when the weather is nice, being close to Coconut Island and Liliuokalani garden, and the room service attendants are approachable and welcoming.

Great location for an event. A little outside town, but a very nice spot. Staff is wonderful.

There are BUGS all over my room, they are on my BED and COUNTER. When I called the front desk, they were not suprised and did not seem to care. Horrible experience. Lots of other reviews have also seen mold, bugs and general lack of upkeep and cleanliness.
BUGS BUGS BUGS
They tried crawling into my skin. I am scared to sleep.

Definitely not worth the money. First, we were put into the wrong sized room and then were told they wouldn't honor the bed on the booking website. Then we were charged more for the "resort" fee, than listed, about $75. The "resort" fee covered the basic pool, a cheap water bottle, parking, and breakfast. The breakfast was a joke, worse than most motel 8's we've stayed at. The bedroom was gross, bed was made but it didn't appear that any other cleaning had been made... there was hair everywhere. And the "balcony" door barely opened with any sense of ease. The cherry on top is that our air conditioning didn't work either. At checkout, that host was actually good at her job and refunded us the resort fee for the poor experience we had.

Well, what can I say, we had a crappy room without a balcony and the windows couldn't be opened either. We were offered a new one after a complaint from the travel agency, but on the last day it was no longer worth packing for us. In the hotel itself there is a continental breakfast which is sufficient with fresh small baked goods, coffee and juices. The location of the hotel is good, right next to the hotel there is a small park and the Volcano National Park is about 40 minutes away and there are also enough free parking spaces available. So it was ok for a few days, but it wasn't for us to relax after a long day. ps the view from the window onto a gray concrete slab is really scary.
Rooms: We had already run down a bit and the wallpaper was coming off the walls. It wasn't cleaned every day and fresh towels and toilet paper were replenished.

Rooms: Leaked AC wet the carpet floor. They came to provide us air blower and towels but it shouldn’t happen.
Food & drinks: Hotel room stay comes with complimentary breakfast for one person ONLY. So another customer of the room has to pay. What most people do is putting more than one person’s quota into their box to share with their roommate. To me their policy of one person coupon per room encourages inappropriate actions of customers; thus should change to complimentary breakfast for two per room.
Noteworthy details: I was asking about breakfast coupons at the front desk and the agent lady not only showed attitude towards me but also misled me into wrong information. It was annoying.

Pros:
- the hotel is very close to downtown Hilo and VNP, so that was very convenient
- if you get a bay view with a balcony, it is quite beautiful
Cons:
- room is very dated (really the entire hotel could use a remodel)
- the shampoo in the room is a conditioning shampoo, so I would suggest bringing your own
- there was something rattling non-stop in the A/C and drove us nuts all night
- there was mold on the A/C unit as well, which is clearly in view, so I’m surprised it hasn’t been cleaned
- the free breakfast is a joke. It was only a platter of pre-made banana bread, fried donut holes, and oatmeal. None of it was very good and the coffee was very weak.
Thankfully my husband and I payed with credit card points, so it was free, but if I had paid for the room I would have really regretted my decision to stay here.
