We took a dog out for the morning. Wonderfully maintained. Everyone very friendly. Animals are well taken care of. It was fun to get a dog fix while on vacation

About a month ago, we got a kitten from the Humane Society. We went looking for something else, but this little kitten had the word “spicy” written by its name tag. It immediately reached out of the cage and stole my husband‘s hat. I truly recommend getting any kitten that has spicy written on its name tag. He’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. My arms are a little ragged, but I love every little kiss( bite ) he gives me. We all need a little spice in our life to make us laugh

Incredible and helpful humane society. We were able to get basic supplies and advice for taking care of a stray kitten and we ended up keeping her! We appreciate the kind hearts and wonderful people who work here.

I wanted to go see the animals and the front door was locked, no one was inside, when it says it was open. I walked around the building to see the back door open and a worker just walking around the yard. There were people inside the cat building but the door was locked to go inside. How can you say you’re open but the doors are locked and no ones around to help? If you’re busy at least put a sign up. Still confused on why there were people inside playing with cats but the door was locked, is no one else allowed to see the animals?

We were looking for something unusual to do for the day because we had done several of the must see things and still had a week left here. We found the humane society posting about taking dogs out for a field trip for the day and thought that would be fun since we all hade pets at home we missed. It’s such an easy thing to do, you’re getting the animals out of their usual surroundings and you’re also exposing them to the public which increases their chances of getting adopted!
The staff is great there! They provide lots of info, directions and the dog gets their own prepared backpack equipped with lots of stuff to make for a happy day including water, treats, seatbelt and even adoption info to hand out if anyone is curious. I highly suggest doing this as you can take them for a couple hours or the whole day!

How do I put this into words to adequately describe how much I love, admire and respect HIHS?
The Hawaii Island Human Society is the most amazing animal rescue I’ve ever had the privilege to work with. The staff and volunteers run their organization with such dedication and care and they LIVE for these animals. The energy and passion they put into nurturing and finding fosters and forever homes for our animal friends is unsurpassed.
Such an arduous task, and they handle it with so much grace.
Although HIHS is a non-profit, the Kona facility is beautiful, just what you’d hope an animal rescue would look like thanks to a very generous grant from the Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation for final renovations, but they NEED donations and volunteers. Same can be said for the Keaau location! From monetary donations, short or long term fostering, taking a shelter dog on a field trip, or volunteering your time to lend a hand at the shelter, we ALL have a responsibility to pitch in and help out.
An immense, heartfelt thank you to all the staff and volunteers at HIHS for all the positive experiences I’ve had fostering, field tripping and volunteering. You guys are the best!
Also: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, SPAY/ NEUTER YOUR PETS!!!
