I was looking for an authentic japanese restaurant to eat at and this place sounded interesting. We got there around 6pm and only one other table occupied. The server was very friendly and sweet. Immediately gave us a free appetizer that I had no idea what it was but found out later it was monkfish liver. It was okay, had a very mild liver flavor and the texture was a bit mealy. Perhaps if I didn't know what an ugly fish monkfish is, I would have enjoyed it mire lol. Ordered some tempura, ahi sashimi, salmon collar and chicken karaage. Everything was fresh and delicious but there wasn't much edible meat on the salmon. Prices were a bit on the high side. Overall a nice meal but will continue looking for my go-to japanese restaurant in Honolulu.

This place is a hidden gem for locals. All foods are very fresh and tasty. Service is very friendly and attentive and always checking tables. BYOB style, they have glasses that we can use. They also offer to keep our drinks cold in an ice bucket that they bring when you have bottle or cans. Can't beat this freshness of sashimi/sushi and wagyu here. Very high quality. There are counter seats and tables. Need reservations on call or through the OpenTable app.

This is an easy 5-star review because J-Shop offers high-quality, fresh, and authentic sushi at an affordable price. They have a joint grocery store selling seasonal fish and a restaurant (by reservation only). Food - Fresh fish that melts in your mouth - Generous fish-to-rice ratio - The sushi nigiri and sashimi omakase are our personal favorites, and they always include the best cuts of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, scallop, and uni. They are consistently really good, and every time, the fish is delicious, and the rice is cooked to perfection (no one wants mushy cold rice... you want that fluffy, sticky texture with sweet yet tangy flavor). Drinks - BYOB, and they offer cups for your sake, wine, and ice buckets to chill the wine. At no extra cost. Plus, the waitresses and chef are so nice and welcoming. Always checking on us and pouring us complimentary hot tea.

The food was amazingly fresh and the staff was friendly. It's a low key restaurant where you can BYOB. Like a true izakaya, we met other diners, shared sake and food, and got to know one another. It was date night for my husband and I, and this dining experience was prob one of my favorite of all time. Good food at reasonable prices. Good people. I would come back in a heartbeat

A Japanese grocery store during the day, izakaya at night. What a great way to utilize the space. Half of the store is used as a small restaurant, so I do recommend making reservations to make sure you have a spot. We had a reservation at 7:30 pm and the restaurant was filled. By the way, it is BYOB! There are many different choices and we all had a hard time deciding what to get. Luckily there were 5 of us so we got to try a little of everything. I do recommend getting the sashimi plate. We were all so amazed at how many pieces there were and some were even hiding! Another dish we enjoyed and ordered twice was the butter scallop. It was the butter that made the scallops so flavorful and soft! The night we went, it was the chef's birthday so of course we shared our sake with him. Also one of the servers drinks, can't leave them out as well :) They have a parking lot so no worries about finding parking. They have a decent amount of space. I do suggest going to the bathroom with a buddy since it is outside and have to go up the stairs.

Such a cute little place. We came for the omakase, and weren't disappointed. Location: unassuming Japanese market. Ample parking. Service: We were the only patrons there and were well taken care of. Service was friendly, attentive, and we felt the chefs hospitality despite the language barrier. He even put on a little music video for us to enjoy! Food: Fresh, simple, and delicious. The omakase was great for the price (in comparison to the mainland). The negitoro was also delicious and had its signature umami rich taste. You'd never guess that there was a sushi spot this good inside a supermarket. Definitely a hidden gem.

Dining at the J-Shop? I've always shopped there to get quality foods (even Wagyu!) from Japan as well as a deliciously quick lunch stop. But, dinner? Well let me tell you this is truly a hidden gem!! Kind of not wanting to share it. But, they truly deserve the recognition. Every dish was so ono! And the amount we ordered, so reasonable. There are three seating times because of the limited space and 90 min a seating. BYOB or a nice Sake. Service is on point. It's cozy, it's relaxed, it's like going to your little neighborhood diner. Wish I lived closer it would be my weekly go to for Japanese dining. Try it. You won't regret it. Oh ya parking? Is no problem you're literally steps from the front door. Thank me later.

Went here for dinner last week. It's byob, the best. I had mixed thoughts of the food, but overall I really liked most of the items. The good was the ankimo and the tamagoyaki. The ankimo was clean tasting and very rich. The tamago was very tasty and probably the best looking tamago and I seen. It was completely yellow without any burn marks, I was very impressed. The carpachio was a but weird for me, but I added the ponzu sauce and it was delicious. The service was really great and Chu was very friendly and talkative. Overall we had a great experience and will definitely return.

I've been coming here for a while now. It used to be to pick up some groceries and a bentos for lunch. Great quality seafood, produce, and mainly to grab some "hard to find" Japan produce. When they opened the Izakaya, i had paid them a visit with my old boss. Great food! The sashimi platter, wagyu steak, chirashi bowl. Delicious! Keep in mind it is BYOB, they do provide water and hot tea. So far i have eaten at the izakaya twice and i love it. Delicious food, great service, and a relaxing casual atmosphere. It almost feels like im at home. Parking is never an issue. If you wanna have a great meal in a comfortable environment pay them a visit.

Interesting spot. It's a Japanese grocery store/ sushi bar/ grab-n-go. We headed to the grab-n-go section towards the far right once you walk in, right past the sushi bar. It was only 12:40 and all they had left was a saba bento, chicken katsu bento, and a pork katsu bento. We asked if they could make one more pork and they seemed hesitant and said it would take about 15 minutes. Didn't seem like they wanted to work anymore. One of us just ended up ordering the sushi and we got the last chicken and pork bento. Four stars because that was the best gobo I ever had! Also the lady in the front was nice and provided us with cups of water when we sat down to eat. Its a good place to come if you come early. I'm sure they had a better selection from the grab-n-go when they opened. There's a few tables to sit and eat if you like to stay there. They also have pau hana at the sushi bar. Also, there's lots a parking which is a plus!
