I am a resident here and was in need of a vehicle on short notice. I usually rent with another rental company but for the first time I chose Payless. I couldn't be happier with the vehicle I got and will be extending my rental.From what I've been reading, many of these reviews are by visitors. Sorry your experience wasn't what you thought it would be. You are visiting an island with limited resources available to its residents that live here and has a capacity to accommodate only so many being an isolated island state. My experience was one of the best with warm and helpful staff. Aloha is not an entitlement and if you respect the island culture, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Payless really helped us out of a jam. Through some extenuating circumstances, my family was left stranded at the airport at the beginning of our vacation without a car. The kind lady at Payless helped us find two minivans at an affordable rate for our week on the island. In a stressful time, she was kind, helpful, and understanding. A lot of companies would have tried to gouge customers looking for a last-minute rental, but they made things easy.

NIGHTMARE. old guy working (budget side) was cluless. Booked with budget and pay less charged us. We got NO RECIEPT, NO EMAIL, NO DEPOSIT REFUND. My husband left his cell phone in the center console. & can't do a report because of no reservation #. It's been 3 weeks and multiple phone calls with no resolution.

the car we got sucked. first of all it was so dirty you think they’d clean the cars after people rent them? the key fob was dead the night we got it, the seats didn’t recline at all it was so uncomfortable. and it was literally almost $1,000 to rent. we told them about all of this when we returned and they didn’t say anything at all. i think this place is a joke and i’m not surprised about all the low reviews.

Predatory rental agency. Run by scumbags. Rent from a local rental place, or something not attached to the budget/avis scum cartel. Support the local economy not predatory not local entities.

New review here. The process was very fast and painless. I was very concerned about the 2 star rating but booked through Expedia and there were no issues. The only thing I imagine would hold anyone up is the system taking a while or if there's a massive line. This wouldn't really be a payless issue but more of anyone that provides a service issue

The man from Payless Maui saved my life!! When I had just checked out the car at the Airport, I discovered that I left my little bag with my creditcard, passport, and everything in it at the gas station when I was eating a pickle on the curb. My flight to LA was leaving in 1.5 hours and I wasn't able to rent a new car because my driver's license was also still in that bag. I called the gas station but they didn't pick up the phone. I was hopeless, but then an angel fell from the sky: the Payless man that was giving directions for the car and looked like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, in the beginning, was willing to help me and drove me in his Red Mustang to the gas station to pick up my bag. I was extremely lucky: it was found and somebody brought it inside! We made it back to the Airport in time and I was even 5 minutes early still for my flight.If the man reads this: thank you again 100 million times! You're the best and one of the kindest human beings I have ever met:)

I've been in a customer service business for more than 30 years. I always want to recognize excellent customer service when I see one as it is harder to find. Anacel from Payless Rentacar was so pleasant, friendly and very helpful. Thank you for a great service with a smile.

They screwed me with the wrong car and then charged me an extra $20 per day to get the car I originally booked. Absolutely unbelievable and horrible start to our trip. I do not recommend this car company at all

I don’t normally leave reviews but I wanted to here because the Google reviews scared me going into this.The Payless counter was bundled with Budget and AVIS so there were around 8-10 people working at the counter getting people checked in and into cars. They only let one guest per reservation into the desk area so it was not super crowded in there and the line was short and streamlined. I waited at maximum five minutes to get up to the counter once getting to the car rental area. Check in was seamless since I had my reservation confirmation and documentation ready to go. I was in, out and in the car pulling away within 15 minutes. The customer service rep at the counter was courteous and did not try to upsell at all.Bringing the car back took two minutes and we were on our way with a email receipt received before we made it to the security line.Overall, a good experience. None of the car rental places had huge lines or people waiting in the sun. It was a covered area and the tram had plenty of room for everyone.

Would give negative stars - THEY WILL CHARGE YOUR CARD $450 dollars if any sand is found in the car. Any sand. They won't call you back or provide any proof of the reasoning for it costing $450 dollars to vacuum a little sand. See my photo for what $450 of sand looks like.

Everything went smoothly. We waited about 20 minutes in the line and got a car that was clean. Car was running well. We had one issue when returning but the manager came and fixed everything. Also explained to us everything we needed to know and was very nice and helpful while doing it. Thank you Ann (I hope I remember the name correctly).The only issue was that we never got the paperwork in the email. Better ask for hard copy or wait until email arrives. The 24 hour clock starts once you get the papers in your hands at the counter, not when you leave with the car fro the gate. Just fyi - we did not know what time counts.
