We've taken our animals to Makai Animal clinic many times and they have always been great. Recently however when we had to put our elderly dog down, everyone there was extremely kind and caring as they comforted us in our time of sadness. The vet even gave us a later than usual appointment to accommodate us.

Since the changeover of this clinic, everything that had helped to defray some of the mounting veterinary costs, such as Pet Assure, matching online prescription costs, selling single doses of Sentinel, etc., have been discontinued or are no longer being honored. Subscribers of Pet Assure were never afforded any notice that Makai would no longer honor and/or at least allow clients to use the service until it expired. For those of us that own multiple animals, or even those that own one animal, it makes it very difficult to afford the care that they need. It is so disappointing that Makai Animal Hospital is no longer interested in the wellbeing of its animal clients/patients as much as it is the bottom line. Pet Assurance, unlike pet insurance, was a subscription service that you could purchase on an annual basis and which provided that you would pay a set amount for veterinary services. I had called in to Makai a couple of days ago for a prescription of Sentinel to be called in to Costco Iwalei. When I drove in from Kailua to Costco Iwalei to pick up the prescription, it had not been called in. OK, I thought to myself, I'll just run down to Makai and follow up on the prescription and purchase a single dose to tide my dog over (she was already days late in getting her monthly dose). Well, Makai Animal Clinic no longer sells individual doses. So my response was that I would run home and print an online ad for Sentinel (it's much cheaper online). Well, Makai no longer honors online ad matching. In any event, we all love our pets and want them to have the best care. The doctors and staff at Makai are wonderful; it's just the practices that are terribly disappointing.

Knowledgeable and friendly staff. They recently renovated the front area. Looks nice. The techs and receptionist are always friendly. I take my rottie to Dr. Asato. I trust her and she is always helpful. You can tell she loves what she does and loves animals. This place is by far hands down better than any VCA I've been to. I've had 3 rotties...Makai is the place to take you pet if you want exceptional care for yours.

The staff is the best, always efficient. They get back to you very quickly & are friendly & down to earth too. My fur babies (cats & a doggie) see Dr. Asato who does both Western & Eastern medicine. My doggie gets acupuncture done. She is the best!!!

This was the second time I have brought my dog to Makai and seen Dr. Wong. I can't say enough about what a kind, patient, compassionate doctor she is. Without going into too much detail about my dog's condition, we are in a situation where diagnosing exactly what's going on and treating her will be extremely expensive. She is 11 years old and so there are difficult decisions to make regarding her care. Dr Wong spent two hours with me this morning going over what tests we could do, what information they would give us and what they would cost. She was understanding of my financial restraints and gave me great advice and care for Kaya. I highly recommend Makai Animal Clinic and Dr Wong.

Favorite vet. They are so informative and not short with me when I have concerns or questions. Every veterinarian I've crossed paths with here has been so thorough with my pets and their care. Vet techs are also very caring. They don't rip me off compared to other populat clinics in the area.

I have searched high and low for a holistic vet that understood Raw Feeding. I also wanted to integrate eastern medicine as opposed to drugging my dog with Western medicine all the time... Makai offers eastern medicine for lifetime health and also had access to Western medicine for more serious issues that require surgery..etc Dr. Asato is my go to vet now. I live in town and solely drive out to Kailua just for my dog to be seen by a real vet. (Dr. Wong is also great, she has helped me when Dr. Asato was out). Dr, Asato does Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture - 2 things that are very hard to find locally in a vet. I've gone to others in town- and they are extremely unreasonable with pricing (in acupuncture). I appreciate that Dr. Asato is so knowledgeable and reasonably priced. You can also do cold laser therapy at Makai! The front desk staff at Makai are thoughtful and one thing I sincerely appreciate is that they call me for appointment reminders the day before! They're always so great at answering the phones & getting back to me within the day. The vet techs are amazing. My pup absolutely loves the vet tech Natalie. (Or maybe it's me haha) she is so sweet and patient. Even though my dog is crabby some days and hates getting acupuncture & fluids, she is always there to calm him down and speak so gently. Ryan is another very knowledgeable vet tech, one outstanding characteristic is his Professionalism. If you bump into one of these two, chat with them! At Makai, I truly appreciate that the vet Techs care. Parking; very easy! They have a small parking lot but I always find parking. Short notice appointments: very accommodating. This is hard to find and I Love this about Makai! Acupuncture appointments are a bit harder to come by- you will most likely need to book 2 weeks out. Facility: The waiting area is air-conditioned nicely and there are a few benches to sit. More than enough seating for all patients. The examination rooms are smaller and older however they have mostly updated technology for lasers and other needs. I don't mind that the facility isnt modern, it gives it character. I love Makai but to be clear, I would follow Dr. Asato where ever she moved to. She is the only reason I drive 40min to Kailua.

The reason for my low rating is related to the fact that Makai Animal Clinic charged me way too much. They sold medication for twice as much as 1800PetMeds. I understand they want to make money, but I felt they were ripping me off. My cat had fleas and not only I had to pay a vet consultation for $65, in addition, they also charged me an arm and a leg for the meds. Never buy meds from them, go to 1800PetMeds.

Been bringing my dogs here for years. Convenient location in the main Kailua town. Nice, little parking lot. Inside is relaxing & they always have a Disney movie playing! Staff is very welcoming & knowledgeable. Vets are awesome. Prices are decent. I have no complaints.
