The history of how much was gone through to get the statue there and just keep it up is amazing. King Kamehameha was truly a good man, and the story is definitely a good one!

The entire grounds are well manicured with well kept restroom facilities. Kept in its turn of the century original form. More than adequate parking on the grounds. The ancient game stones remain accessible with no barrier as is the sacred statue of the Great One. The unpolished solid wood pughs are original and a comfortable resting place in shade on the wrap around porch with a water fountain. There's a Veterans Memorial dating from WW1 serving as the backdrop to the Militant King who united the Island Kingdom with an eerily interesting history of the lost, but then miraculously recovered shipwrecked statue from the Pacific depths, to its original and final resting place in Kohala. A most fantastic feature at the birthplace of a sacred and most celebrated King of the Aloha State.

It's nothing special. But... We still stopped up pay respect to the king that united the islands. Also... The only public restrooms in the area are there :-)

We drove up the coast from Kona and set this as our destination. It's not worth a special trip, unless you are interested in the history. It's just a small statue right off the highway. Since it was sprinkling rain we didn't even get out of the car, just turned around in the parking lot. We found a nice beach park a little further up the road so the trip wasn't a total bust.

Je passeert er op weg naar pololu valley, dus wel even stoppen. Is het originele standbeeld dat zonk en nadien werd opgevist

I just love this original statue of the great King. Today when I drove there, there was a huge school bus crowd that blocked every view, except the back! Here are my photos. Glorious weather!

First time seeing this statue, it is majestic as he is. Nice drive up the kohala coast to get to the monument, highly suggest to make a stop to see this. Worth the amazing views of the coastline, passing thru small towns and mom and pops stores, etc. It won't disappoint and get to know our hawaiian culture and the amazing king & queens that once ruled our beautiful islands.

Nice pit stop. There are some.shops nearby and a place to get some food. There are bathrooms in the back on the left of the statue and building.

I love North Kohala so much. It's one of my fave places in the world. We visit at least once a year and some times more often. When we do, I always like to stop and see Kamehameha I's statue and pay some respect. This area is where he was born and has an old world Hawai'i vibe and is off the beaten track in a way that other places aren't. You have to go out of your way to come here - and you should. There are several Kamehameha statues around but this one near his birthplace is the original. The most photographed one is on Honolulu out front of their state Supreme Court, but this one tucked away in North Kohala is the original and the best. The Honolulu statue wasn't created until after the ship delivering the original statue from Europe was lost at sea near Cape Horn. The original statue was later found and was erected in North Kohala near King Kamehameha's birthplace. Come see the King, read about the history, and then walk across the street and have an ice cream. It's a good stop on the way up to Polulu Valley. There are many historic places up in North Kohala, small shops, farms, hikes, and it is all worthwhile. Make a day of it.

Loved it...the grounds and statue were beautifully maintained. Sad, though, to see the veterans' photos and narrative were left open to the elements and fading fast. The women's restroom was too scary to use with standing water throughout the facility... didn't know if the toilet had backed up and didn't want to hazard a trek!

Just a statue nothing else around it to do really. There is a restaurant and nice gift store across the street.

Pretty cool picture spot with a lot of history. There is a house with statue in front. Quite a bit of people walking around the area on a Friday can easily ask to get a picture.

We thought it respectful to visit the King while staying on his land. :)
