We had a great surfing course for beginners. We did some dry exercises and then quickly headed into the sea. Our trainer was fantastic. We had a lot of fun. We also had our first successes.
Great value for money, right on the beach, and excellent communication and service. We can only recommend anyone who wants to take a surfing course to learn their first steps on the board at Kawai Surf School. Have fun.

Great instructor! He was super friendly and helpful. We've been to other surf schools and was able to get up a couple times, but with the surf instructor's here, they teach a different way, which had us all getting up almost everytime.

We were really excited to try surfing with my 12-year-old son. Everything started out OK but once we got into the water, I felt that my son wasn’t given a lot of attention. I saw him slowly floated away from the rest of the group and get hit by multiple waves. No one really was looking for him or asked where he was. I thought at some point the teacher would bring him back into the group, but he continued to get hit with waves and move away from the group after about 20 minutes of that I removed him from the water and notified the girl at the desk that I didn’t feel that the teachers were really paying attention to all of the students. She seemed very buzzy about it and just said sorry. I told her we’re gonna go ahead and leave and I didn’t receive much of a response. I think that either the very young people who are teaching need to be retrained, have more teachers or less students.

This is the place you want to choose to take the family on their first surf lesson! We had the absolute time of our lives. Instructor was perfect, so were the waves

This was a good experience. The instructor was friendly. Something to be mindful of is if the tide is high it can be risky walking down the slippery wooden stairs with the surfboard. My youngest daughter slipped down 3 stairs and cut her foot and couldn't take the lesson. Kai was kind enough to refund her fee. Precautions should be taken to put the boards on the wall rather than carry them down the stairs. Also there should be anti-slip stairs with railings on both sides. I'm happy they teach friendly lessons, but would be happier if my kid didn't get hurt. Thank you for reimbursing us!

Great time! J was super helpful with my two teen daughters and made us all feel comfortable and successful. With only 3 of us in the class we were able to get in many reps! The school also sent us emails with clear links on which directions to follow, which brought us right to a public parking lot! So that was super easy, don't over think this, trust them.

I took a private surfing lesson at 8:00 a.m. That time of day is the best because hardly anyone is at the beach. The instructor was professional and had a calm, relaxed vibe. I've had other lessons at different schools in the past, but none of them were as great or informative as this one. He taught me every important aspect, and with his help, I was able to catch many waves and stand up on most of them. The location is nice as well because it's right next to the beach. I highly recommend going there.

Our 8 and 10 year old boys had a surf lesson with Esiah (not sure on spelling). He was awesome really taught the boys what they needed to do and kept encouraging them to keep trying. After a few minutes they got the hang of it and had a great time.

Having had classes at 3 different surf schools at Poipu beach, Be aware, they will have the class regardless of surf conditions! It was like a lake with 0.5 feet waves every 10 minutes and they wouldn't reschedule the class.
Overall instructors and set-up is great and they spend a lot of detail on teaching you, but there is little point in all that if there are 0 waves, on the entire 1.5 hour class I was able to ride ~4 waves. Not worth the money. Other surf schools on the beach do provide rescheduling options and are constantly monitoring surf conditions. If you don't mind this at all and just want convenient small surf attempts for ultimate beginners or you've confirmed that surf will be great when booking this is still a great place.

Spent $75 ($83 with tax and fees) on a surf lesson here, and was extremely disappointed with my experience. The instructors were friendly, but they weren’t great teachers. We did talk about how to get up, and each person practiced on land for about thirty seconds while the two instructors watched. Then, we were told to carry our boards down to the beach while they got their suits and sunscreen on. Honestly, it was a bit frustrating that they weren’t ready before our lesson started, as we had to wait for 5+ minutes for them. Then, we got vague instructions about where to paddle out to in the water. Most of us had no idea what was happening, and we just timidly sat on our boards in the waves while our instructors hung out with each other in the water for about ten minutes. Finally, they called us over to them. Then, one by one, they just pushed our boards towards the sand and told us to stand up. Many times, they pushed us right into each other or right into another surfer. We all wiped out multiple times from hitting another surfer or their board. After being pummeled by another surfer one too many times, I gave up and sat on the beach for the last 20 minutes of the lesson.
I want to be clear that the instructors were always kind, and I did actually stand up on the board a couple of times (hence the two stars). Maybe instructors here could benefit from more training or learning teaching techniques, though. Also, the area of the beach we used was extremely crowded, which is not their fault but definitely still added to my frustrating experience.
I would honestly recommend just watching a YouTube video and then renting a surfboard from this same company. It’ll save you a bunch of money and you can become just as frustrated on your own.

Sent the kids (18 boy and 13 girl) to these guys this morning! The guides ( Mason and another guy who’s name I’m missing) were A++ awesome and encouraging. The waves were great for beginners. Both kids and cousin all caught multiple waves. Great fun, and the right school! Thank you Kauai Surf School!
