BE VERY CAREFUL RENTING FROM THIS LOCATION.We locked in a price with Expedia which was correctly shown in the rental contract that we signed when we picked up the car. After we left the car we ended up with a bill 3 times higher. They changed the weekly/daily rate from what we had signed in the original contract. This occurred with the car I rented as well as the car that my in-laws rented. We were able to get it rectified with the billing department (still waiting for the refund) but it looks like they are doing this frequently, hoping that people will not notice. KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS & CONTRACTS.

We rented a vehicle when we arrived on our vacation because I was in such a hurry I did not inspect vehicle tires a little too warn out for the adventures we were going to take. We took the vehicle back 2 days later and the manager went above and beyond for us in getting us an exchange vegetable. The vehicle was also a better one and we enjoyed our adventures. We will definitely rent from here again in the future.

It took us over an hour to pick up our car rental at Thrifty on Kauai. We prepaid for our vehicle for 6 passengers and our luggage. We showed up to pick up our vehicle and they had it on the lot but no keys for it. They refused to make it right. Both the associate (who refused to give her name and wore no name tag) and manager, Kalu, idea of making it right was to make us wait another hour for a comparable vehicle to come back in, pay more for an upgrade, or not provide service that we already paid for and kick our family off the property. Welcome to Hawaii! There was a prompt response to our 1-star rating. Not sure if this is an automated response, being as there have been numerous complaints and no improvements with their customer service.

Worse than I could have imagined.I booked through Expedia for a quarter of what they charged me! When I tried to fight it when I returned the car, they had already shredded my contract 2 minutes after I handed it to them! So we couldn’t see the original terms!!! This is nuts. Also, when I picked up the car first they gave me a car with a check engine light. And then the replacement car had HUGE damage. The attendant told me to “just take a video so you are not charged.” Not only is that crazy to put proof on me, but why would I take a car with massive damage? I then found the manager who was leaving for the night and showed her the damage and she was shocked! So shocked that she was trying to find the employee that even checked in that car to rent it.Overall, a scam.

My partner and I were very nervous after already booking our car to them see the overwhelming bad reviews. For those of you who were like me and started worrying based on these bad reviews. Let me be the one to tell you our experience was FANTASTIC. We had a shuttle bus take us from the airport straight to the rental place. Took 3 mins. Upon arrival I was very pleased to see ZERO line. I walked right in and was served straight away, great staff had our booking that was reserved ready to go. We were given a Dodge charger that had full fuel and was clean. I was in the rental car after 10mins. As an Australian traveller I was also happy they accepted Debit Cards. This was my personal experience Dec 2024 and it was seamless, smooth and nothing like the overwhelming bad reviews listed. So for those reading reviews/already booked their is hope!! You will be fine. Mahalo!

Long lines, worst customer service, gas tank not full, and they try to fraudulently charge you extra for washing the car. Worst rental in over 30 years of renting

Returned car with full tank of gas. Refueled within a few miles of airport. Thrifty Lihue then sent a receipt to me saying I returned car at 84% fuel and charged me for three gallons of gas. Only way to dispute claim is by an automated online system. No way to call Thrifty Lihue directly to quickly correct charge. Very unsatisfied.

I declined to purchase the fuel from Thrifty when I picked up the car. I returned the vehicle after filling up the gas tank to full at Costco gasoline. I elected to receive the receipt through email when I returned the car. When I checked the receipt after I got home, I was charged for fuel for $10.61, even tough I brough the car back with a full tank. This is dishonesty on their business practice. I wonder how many other customers got charged for fuel even though they brough back the vehicles with a full tank.

Received a minivan that was in horrific condition. Was over $900. Brakes and rotors were shot. Made noise the entire week which was not only embarrassing but also unsafe. Van on the outside was horrific as well.

SAFETY ISSUE, READ BELOWTook 1.5 hours to get to the counter to check in even though i had a reservation. They started upselling a more expensive vehicle despite my prepaid reservation.Lost an additional 30 minutes to get the right car. I was first given a car with bald tires that didn't pass a "coin safety check" for adequate tire thread. This is horrible because not everyone knows to check the tires. Driving on bald tires may easily cause a tire blowout or losing control while driving - especially when it rains in Hawaii. I don't think there's a safety inspection of the vehicles. The car in question was dusty and not pleasant to sit in.Fortunately, we got them to give us a 2023 replacement option, but after the wasted 2 hours, it should be taken for granted.Fyi: Optional loss and damage waiver is $34.99 a day. Without it, they say, in case of an accident , they'll have you pay out of pocket for a long time while the car may be being repaired or waiting for parts , thus causing loss of profit for them. Sounds fair, but for 7 days, we paid over $500 for an SUV, not counting gas.I suggest not taking a rental car, especially from this place. Better use Uber or Lyft to save money on rentals and insurance.

Waited in line for 2 hours to get my car. The employees were friendly/helpful enough and there were no problems using the car itself, but still. 2. Freaking. Hours. There were 5 stations where employees could have been working, but only 2 were on duty (and one of them just kinda...walked away from his desk several times). The employee who helped us said they're understaffed, and I'm sure that's frustrating for management...but my sympathy doesn't make a 2-hour wait in line following a 6-hour flight any less aggravating.

If I could give a negative star, I would... I'm still trying to understand how I tried to utilize 4 of their broken vehicles in a 48-hour timeframe, and I get charged for all of them (nearly $2000 later). All of the vehicles were not road safety or need the required items to ensure their safe operation. It's bad that I had to utilize a vehicle of Enterprise to ensure the safety of myself and my passengers. Enterprise has first-time quality work ethics and outstanding customer service. I can't say the same for Thirty car rental.

The worst experience!! Long waits! Rude customer service! We returned our car when it was due. No one there to check us in. Was told by a car cleaning representative just to leave the key in the car.4 days later I'm still trying to close out my rental agreement!! Called the 1-800 Thrifty number and spoke with 4 different people scattered around the world which did not speak very good English. Rented from Thrifty many of times. Never had this problem. Never again!!!

Though there is a lot of bad reviews, we actually had a good experience. A free shuttle takes you straight over to and from the rental car place. We did wait in a "longish" line but I also noticed it was mostly due to people not making reservations ahead of time or requesting a larger vehicle. We had a sedan, Nissan Altima, and it had amazing gas mileage and got us all around the island. People complain about the vehicles being "dirty" but the car will get dirty no matter what from all the sand. Returning the car was quick and easy.

Terrible experience. After a long travel day we had to wait over an hour to get our car. Then, they didn't have the car we reserved (mid size SUV) so they said we could wait or they could give us a bigger one instead. Exhausted and tired of waiting, we took the bigger one. Well this bigger one (Ford Expedition) is terrible. It's so big I can barely get it into any parking spot, it drinks an unbelievable amount of gas, it's full of dents and dings, and is very uncomfortable to drive due to it's massive size. They said if it's too big I could come and exchange it. I've made THREE trips back to the airport to do just that but the line was even longer than the first time. The last time I tried the line was out the door and the lady at the end of the line said they've already been there an hour. I don't know what to do. This is easily the low point of our Kauai version. Never again will I use Thrifty.
