The location is the best as it’s the only accommodation in the whole east of the island. The manager is amazing, Marisa. She’s super kind and helpful. The location of the hostel and the views to the town over the lava fields are impressive.

We really enjoyed our time at this hostel. The people were really friendly and helped us out with everything. It’s rare to meet such nice people!!! The free breakfast was great and we enjoyed the nice atmosphere and talks:) it’s really calm and the lava ground looks stunning. Of course it’s not a 5star hotel but we didn’t expect that. We came for the Hawaiian experience and we weren’t disappointed.

everyone involved at the hostle was super cool and awesome to hangout with/meet! cool location on the lava rocks, off grid quiet location. perfect spot to just chill and go around seeing the beaches and nature. cant wait to come back one day

I had an amazing time at Open Gate Hostel. This place and its surroundings were exactly what I was looking for - so peaceful, with no light or noise pollution. It’s the perfect remote spot to unwind, relax, and recharge yourself.
The host, Marissa, is incredibly kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable. She gave me so many great recommendations for local events and places to explore. This part of the island is stunning, and the uniqueness of the hostel makes the experience even more special.
I really needed a break from my day-to-day routine, and this off-grid hostel provided everything I needed to reset and recharge. I can’t wait to plan my another trip here. Going back super soon!

What a cute place to stay! The hostess Marissa was super kind and informative. First of all, this was my husband, and I first time saying in a hostel. We had a timeshare booked, but we were in Tauyna day early so we needed a place to stay for one night so we thought we would try it. I will tell you when you first drive up to the property. I was a little worried.. It seemed a little sketchy. Just the whole neighborhood seemed sketchy. I had never seen volcano lands like that before. I guess after the volcano destroyed all the homes there the people who built Baacke had to be completely off grid because there’s no utilities.
Once we step inside, we’re really pleasantly surprised. I mean it was no Marriott or Hilton, but it was everything that you need. It had all the basics. You do have to share the bathroom and showers, but they were very clean. They were only a few other guests there and they were quite pleasant to interact with . There’s a shared kitchen and lots of shared sitting areas to hang out. I met a lady from Japan and she taught me how to make some yummy Japanese foods in the kitchen. We met another family from marathon with their very sweet 10 year old boy. My impression was that hostels were places where people went who were on the outputs of society people who wanted to be able to smoke pot and not have anyone say anything to them. I definitely was wrong. It was very respectful and there were rules posted about the expectations of the guest. My husband and I felt safe. *** I also wanted to mention all the cool murals that they had painted. They had an area with games a TV watching area a stargazing porch on the roof, it’s really like a treehouse!!

One of our favorite spots of our trip. Marissa was an awesome host. She gave so much information and tips about the area and the volcano. We enjoyed the hostel and its open feel. We loved all of the outdoor spaces and the murals. We plan to return!

This place was everything I was looking for to celebrate my birthday!! It was quiet, warm, good vibes all around, and nature all over! The lava rocks and stars were amazing to see! I am so happy I choose to come here! If you want to enjoy a nice place to unwind, relax, and not worry about anything come to this hostel! It’s the best! Mariza is a great host and always kind! Thank you for a great experience!!!! 🫶🏽🙌🏽☀️🌊🏝️🌋

This place is incredible, but the people who are in there too. I lived my dream thanks to that wonderful person who opens the doors of his house and is able to sit down to talk to you and make you feel at home and forget that you are 12 hours apart and many miles away

Amazing location on the lava fields, far off the tourist hot spots. Marissa was an awesome host and provides the best suggestions for cool local places. The hostel is clean and has a great vibe, and breakfast, coffee and towels are provided for free.
Can fully recommend this place to every traveler!

We had a lovely relaxing stay! This is such a special, secluded area. Marissa was wonderful. You have to walk to see the cliff if you stay here! Amazing.

Place is calm and away from tourists traffic. Located on lava land that was amazingly impressive. Marissa was very kind and friendly and had a nice conversation on our last night there mainly because we were gone all day most days but woke up very rested every morning. Would definitely stay again

Loved staying here... Clean , pretty, nice people, a very pleasant experience. Right down the road are the most beautiful beaches , this is a perfect hub to explore the hotsprings and all of the area. Lady that runs the place is a complete sweetheart and always gets what you need.

Loved my stay at Open Gate! Marissa and Dan were both very nice and fun to talk to. Marissa was very knowledgable about the surrounding areas/volcanoes and had good recommendations. Highly recommend renting a car since the hostel is off the beaten path a bit. It was also built on a lava field so the views are amazing and I was able to see the milky way at night a few times. Would definitely stay here again.
