One of the best hostels I've ever been to. Family atmosphere, the owners were always available, gave tips or took me to the beach. Very comfortable beds. Would come back any time!

The people who own the hostel are very kind and accommodative, they met with us almost every morning during our stay to give travel suggestions or even just to talk. Very friendly and a very nice facility all

Booked a one-night private room with bathroom at Open Gate, checked in at night and left before day break so sadly we weren’t able to take in the lava field views before we left.Very friendly host, very cool hostel views - would recommend if you like to take the road less taken in terms of lodging. If you can, book a private room with private bath and stargaze & socialize here for the night

The most lovely place in my heart. It is located on the lave where the lave enters the ocean. The ocean in Southeast is the most blue part. I got extremely peaceful sleep during the stays. It is jungle climate, very local Hawaii, not tourism style. Wish I could explore more…wish I could live here for a long while. The host is very nice. Fast WIFI and also good Verizon signal.Next time I wish I could come alone, rather than came with someone who only wanted to go Kona everyday.…Wish every girl could have a healthy relationship or enjoy being with yourself happily.

I booked one week and extended for two extra weeks! I felt very welcome at the hostel, enjoyed cooking together here. This place was a extraordinary life transforming experience on the lava fields meeting people from all over the world. Exchanging stories and exploring the coast with all the great spots like hot springs; Kehana Black sand beack and local farmers market made this trip very special. Music events at Wednesday night market 5 min. away. I will definitely be back and take my friends with me. Oh, vielen Dank Dan and MarissaNoteworthy details: They offer free shuttles to the close black sands beach and free pick up from closes town. Soon they will add rental cars which will make the whole island explorable.Rental bikes available as well.

What an AMAZING place to stay just 45 minutes south of Hilo. My husband and I can't say enough good things about this place. I communicated with Marissa for over a year due to us needing to change our vacation dates several times. She was so incredibly accommodating and worked with me to ensure we got as much out of our time here as we could. We didn't spend much time at the hostel because we were exploring most of the time, but while we were there we met lots of lovely people from all over the world.I also had a special connection with Morca the cat ?.A truly MAGICAL experience to have in one of the most unique places in the world. Mahalo Marissa and Open Gate Hostel for hosting us.Nearby activities: Hilo is 45 minutes north, there is a local farmers market, town of Pahoa has some restaurants and shopping.Safety: Felt very safe staying here.Walkability: I would suggest some type of transportation if staying here and you want to explore more of the island.Food & drinks: Kitchen available in the hostel and several restaurants in PahoaNoteworthy details: Situated on lava rocks, they use collected rainwater and run on solar. Lots of murals and artwork.

We only booked one night but would have liked to have spent more time there. The place is conducive to disconnection. The hostel is very clean and the people are super friendly. There is a small market next door on Saturdays not to be missed.

It's a strange place for me. There were hardly any guests, I stayed alone in my dorm for 6 people for days until I decided I leave because it is really not fun to stay in an empty hostel. The location is truly unique, but it is really-really far from everything. They advertise it as reachable by public transportation, well it is not... sporadically there is a bus. The crew working there wasn't helpful and behaves distant. For the rest, the rooms were nice but only 2 hot showers available.
