From Mama's Fish House

A family owned restaurant since 1973. Featuring Hawaiian fish brought to us daily by our fishermen. Every day our fishermen go out in small boats to catch a variety of fish for us: multi-colored Mahi-mahi and tropical Ono, caught near our buoys 30 miles offshore. Reef-feeding bottom fish like Opakapaka, Onaga, Lehi and Uku, caught at depths of 2000 feet and slowly brought to the surface; fighting Ahi caught far out at sea with fast boats trolling lures; Papio from the lagoons near shore; Moi from the fish ponds. Fishermen bring the fish directly to us. We process and serve it within 24 hours. Our daily menu lists the name of the fisherman and where they caught their fish.

Mama's has one of the best locations on the island: away from the resort areas, on the oceanfront in the small residential community of Kuau, on the Hana Highway. A lush coconut grove provides shade as you walk on a sidewalk with M.C. Escher artwork to a beautifully decorated, woodsy, homelike restaurant that has authentically captured the essence of old Hawaii. This is a wonderful place to relax, to stare out at the rolling surf (at lunch or early evening) and enjoy fresh island fish---Mama's specialty. She offers chicken and steak, but her heart is in preparing fish, always fresh-caught and prepared a variety of creative ways (such as grilled and served with a spicy wasabi sauce or seared with fresh herbs). The wine list has offerings of limited- and estate-bottlings from California that are hard to find in the Islands. Everything about the place is top-drawer, including the price, which is astronomical when compared to other fine fish restaurants. It is a very nice experience, usually crowded, but it is definitely not the biggest bang for your buck. We strongly recommend lunch, when you can see the ocean and the prices are slightly lower.
