If you bank here this is your suggestion not to, or to close you account and look for a new bank. I personally switched banks and closed my account here because of the way they act and treat me when I come here for my job. I come here at least once a day as I’m the manager where I work. I’m constantly taking my deposits and change orders here through the week.
I’m not at all pleased with this bank. I’m constantly fighting with them to do their jobs correctly.
It’s a normal situation where I’m brining 2-3 days of deposits, because I’m not here everyday of the week. During this time I’m also bringing a change order for them to follow.
Yesterday, 6/10/2025 I brought three deposits and my change order here at the Charleston location. I sat at the window for 10 to 15 minutes. After they came back to the window and told me that I wrote $190 dollars on my change order, which was correct.
They then told me that I only brought them $90 dollars of the $190 dollars.
I asked them if they were sure and the lady at the window was incredibly rude, she said “mhm” holding the money and giving me a dirty look like I’m stupid.
I then told them I wanted all my deposits back with my change order because I knew that wasn’t correct.
They gave it back to me all out of order and messed up. I put in the the bag for them all nicely stacked with the deposit slips in between all the money for each day it went with, along with the change order being on top. When I got it back I had to reorganize it and put it all back together, and suddenly I was missing $100 dollars of my $190 dollar change order. I came back to my job and looked everywhere. It was no where to be found. I called them to ask them to recount their drawers because I knew that I had given it to them. They told me they would call me back. After waiting 20 minutes for a drawer to be recounted, then never called back. I decided to then call them and ask for an update about the missing $100 dollars.
The guy on the phone was struggling to finishing a full sentence and I could barely understand what he was trying to say it me. He told me that he had counted his drawer and that they did not have the missing money. I processed to tell him that everyone at the window needed to recount their drawers because it made no sense how myself and another employee saw me put the $190 dollars in the bag going to the bank, and all of a sudden when I got my change order and deposits back it was missing the $100 dollars.
He told me that he would call me back in another 20 minutes?! The guy over the phone told me that he had done his part and he didn’t have it. That he had recounted my change order and deposits multiple times and said it was never correct upon receiving it. He said upon receiving my deposits and change order that it was a mess and there was no way to tell which money went with what day. That’s incorrect, considering anytime I bring it I make sure I put it as neat as possible, trying to make their jobs easier. He just kept blaming me for the mix up and the missing money.
I then called my boss and told her about the situation, and they magically found the $100 dollars I was missing in their drawers. I get mistakes are made, we are human it happens. But this happens more often than not.
You’re working at a bank, where you count money everyday. So you’d think this wouldn’t be an issue on a regular occurrence. This bank is constantly messing up with money.

Absolutely the worst bank I have even banked with. They are very slow at windows & constantly lose all important information received. I can’t stand coming here.

been going here for change orders for my place of work, and I absolutely dread this part of my job because of the bad experiences I’ve been having as of recently. To be more specific, it’s a counting problem. Everytime I bring a change order they end up giving me the wrong amount of change back. Once, we asked for 2 rolls of quarters and gave $20 dollars since each roll of quarters is $20, makes sense right? Well apparently not. We got $2 in quarters and they kept the $18. The cherry on top, I can hear through the glass the man saying “they don’t even know how to count.” You could’ve even asked me if you were confused too, but apparently not. This is literally a counting issue. This is only one experience too. I could go on. Seems like they just hire anyone nowadays.

I've usually had an excellent experience with First Mid. It's hard to get someone on the phone a lot of times, but that's about it.Fraud resolution is usually great.

They allowed unauthorized charges of hundreds of dollars overdraft my account. I expressed to them I never authorized the charges. They basically said sorry for you and turned me into check systems. They take zero accountability for their mistakes and expect you to foot the bill.

Horrible to deal with when fraud charges are on your account. They take zero responsibility for it when you put a stop payment on fraud charges, and months later will charge you for it again, even if you do not have the money in your account. Then expect you to pay for it as well as any fees that happened.

Edit to remove prior poor review regarding the inability to cash a mis-endorsed cashier's check.. Branch manager was responsive and polite, and gave me an option, which I'll decline to exercise. Still not a fan of the policy, but at least the cashier's check is no longer worthless.

Tremendously disappointed about first mid on Broadway. Trying to put a check in bank to my account.. was written out to me, however it came from a bank in Effingham... It was practically signed over to me, where I had to sign on the bottom and bank. The person who wrote the check . I forgot to sign on the bottom where a red cross was marked. The young man said do you suppose to sign there? I said yes.. I explained to him why.. the assistant manager came around and took attitude yelled at me and said no you not supposed to sign there we can not except the check.. I was taken back first if all about her behavior. She practically called me a liar after I explained to her.. she didn't bother to call the bank nor did she call or ask for the number of the person signing over the check.. I have never ever been treated like that, after being with this bank for 40 years.. after she called the number I gave to her she then gave the check to the young man to put in my account. He gave me the receipt. I ask for him to tell her to come and speak with me. No apology about her being wrong until I told her at least I expected that, no, she went on and kept her attitude yelling at me that this was not an every day situation they worked with.. I said an apology would be nice. Her attitude with that was not quite normal..After one hour the manager calle, making an excuse about the situationObviously the story was told to her in a way with no truth.. I will never go to the bank on Broadway, which bu the way was told to me also by the assistant manager. Who hires those people? Curious people at the bank should be expected! Not so!Very disappointed

I do wish that they hadn't closed down their downtown Charleston location, but from what I see, this location can still handle the demand in a timely and friendly manner

I have banked with First Mid for many years now. Recently we moved and closed our account. One of the $100 bills we got from them was counterfeit and when we went to deposit it the next day at our new bank it got confiscated. We then called first mid and they said "they are not liable" so we are out $100. This is an insignificant amount to such a large bank but for a new family it is alot of money. I will not recommend this bank ever again.
