This place blew my mind! It is a combination of museum and bookstore. A must for any history buff, antiquarian bibliophile, or collector of Lincoln, Civil War, or Americana memorabilia. The people who work there really know their stuff and are great to talk to. You will learn so much. There is no storefront, so you have to call when you get there. However, you will get a personal experience with people who are passionate and knowledgeable about this era in American history.

We made a short, but wonderful visit to the book shop. Plan to spend some time here - the book collection, as well as the collection of Civil War/Presidential photographs, signatures, and other memorabilia, is extensive and unique. The staff was amazing - telling us about individual pieces that may be of interest while being very friendly and welcoming. A must-stop for any fan of American history. We will be back the next time we are in Chicago!

The most knowledgeable, friendly, and professional staff you will ever meet. Each is highly specialized and ready to explain any factual concept about Abraham Lincoln, The Civil War, or Chicago History and happily take you to the original source or primary document supporting their knowledge. At this point you will be able to purchase it in person from their museum- library- bookstore setting. If they don’t have it the store’s staff can order it for you or locate the institution owning the original. A world-class bookstore with the most knowledgeable and friendly staff. It’s my place to spend a weekend afternoon for reading or locating that one of a kind special gift fit for a president. My life feels so much richer after each visit.

Over the years, my wife and I have purchased new, rare and first-edition books, autographs, original oil paintings and other historical documents and artifacts at Dan Weinberg's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago. But an Ammonite Fossil? That's a first. "One of the oldest artifacts we've ever handled," Weinberg said. An ancestor of today's nautilus and other mollusks, this long-extinct cephalopod lived in the ocean during thee Jurassic era, about 200 million years ago. The shop was established in 1938 by Ralph Newman, who hoped to serve the passionate collecting needs of a small circle of friends devoted to the study of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. Weinberg entered into a partnership with Newman in 1971, then purchased Newman's interest in 1984 to become the sole proprietor. We met Weinberg at the original book store address on Chestnut Street near State Street in the 1970s, then followed him when he opened a new shop on West Chicago Avenue near Orleans, then again when he moved to his current address at 824 West Superior Street, west of Halsted and Division. It's a must-see for Civil War and Lincoln buffs, a museum where you can purchase a pardon signed by Lincoln and future President Andrew Johnson for $12,500 or a Civil War Ambulance Guidon for $12,500. A collection of eight signed photographs of Lincoln's cabinet recently sold for $115,000. We purchased an original oil painting of the battle of "The West Woods" at Antietam by well known Civil War artist Keith Rocco. The next day, the Mellon Library in Pittsburgh to offer to purchase our painting to pair with Rocco's sister painting of the battle of "The Cornfield" at Antietam. We still have our painting. When you buy something from Dan Weinberg's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, you don't often part with it.

My husband and I went here on a whim, just because it was on our way to a restaurant where we were having dinner. Could not recommend more highly. Neither of us has any special interest in or knowledge of Lincoln or the Civil War, but the bibliopole (this is what his card says) Bjorn Skaptason gave us a guided tour of the store. We ended up hitting on the topic of German migration to the US during the 19th century, in particular the role of German radicals in the abolition movement, a piece of history I had never heard about. I was completely hooked and we ended up being late to dinner. It would be interesting to know what other pockets of deep knowledge Bjorn has.

I have been a customer for over 45 years. Remarkable inventory over the years. I once could have bought a copy of the Lincoln Douglas debates signed by Lincoln for $5,000. But that was a long time ago when I did not have two nickels to rub together. That was the fish that got away. Want to know about Lincoln, Presidents and the Civil War? Dan is the Man!
