i had my first visit today after some friends recommended it. i had a different experience. i wasn't greeted by anyone when i arrived , i walked around the greenhouse for awhile and no one acknowledged me. i did find what i was looking for but they were hanging out of reach .. really planned to leave empty handed since i couldn't spot who was an employee or who was a customer . the only employee who did approach me ( mustve seen my lost face ) didn't even work in the department, she was stocking pots and asked if i needed any assistance , spoke to me very nicely and then proceeded to get someone from the greenhouse to come help. i did end up purchasing my plants so day wasn't totally ruined . the selection here truly is amazingly beautiful , i can stay all day just walking in there.

Excellent selection, and a knowledgable staff. There is no parking lot, and it's a little on the pricier side. It's not the most convenient set-up if you're getting a large haul.

Best garden center in the city and suburbs. Nothing comes close. Was just there and the 2023 "overpriced" Xmas tree issue was a mistake... the trees had been mis-marked and the issue has been fixed. Bad mistake on Gethsemane's part? Yes, but the issue was rectified. I asked a salesperson about it because the trees all seemed to be fairly priced and similar to last year's prices... nothing like what I had read here on Yelp. The staff here actually know and care about plants, unlike other garden centers. If you want cheap, sunburnt petunias and marigolds? Go to Home Depot... no one's stopping you. But if you want better quality plants and a far better selection, go to Gethsemane and pay a little more. It's worth the extra money. The employees are awesome and give great advice and service. Possibly my favorite store in Chicago, period.

My husband and I went to get a Christmas tree and although their trees are spectacular they wanted anywhere from $350 to $600 for a tree! Even though the staff there are super nice and helpful, those prices are simply robbery. I was so disappointed, but there was no way we were going to drop that kind of money on something that's going to wind up in a wood chipper in five weeks.I bought one there last year for less than $200 and it was big and beautiful. I have no idea where they get off charging nearly three times that much for the same size tree. Very disheartening.

I have been shopping here for over 20 years and was stunned to see the prices of there Christmas trees ranging from $400-700.00 for average trees. Meanwhile a few miles up the road at Chalet the prices are 180-200. This is a clear issue of price gouging. Sad

I’m torn. We have been coming here for decades and getting our holiday wreath and tree here every year. We got our wreath and are very happy with it. It’s beautiful as always. However, while we know tree prices have increased, your tree prices are appalling. $560 for a ~6 foot Fraiser fir is ridiculous.Sorry, but we had to go somewhere else for an equally beautiful, less expensive tree.

I created an account specifically to share the utterly heinous way the manager in the indoor decorations section (older man- late 60's?, white hair, thin, glasses) treated a woman and her son yesterday evening. The woman was returning several Christmas decorations. All were still wrapped in tissue paper, clearly unused. The manager came over and started to berate and humiliate her in front of her son and the rest of the store. It sounded like she'd come back once before to exchange one (of DOZENS of items she purchased within the last MONTH alone) because the motor of a Christmas decoration was acting-up and stopped working when she got it home. They'd sold her the item on display in the store, instead of giving her a new item to begin with. Apparently this same manager took the item she brought back, changed the batteries, and had the cashier give her the same item instead of a new one, and this woman trusted the store and only discovered this when she got home, so she was back again with the same item. It sounded like it was clear from the location and positon of the price tag, which she had photos of that were taken in the store when the item was originally on display. The other identical items we saw didn't have price tags on them, or the price tag was in a different location and positioned in a different way. My wife tried to remove the sticker to see if she could move it. The stickers on the tree were stuck as if glued. It would be impossible to remove the sticker and keep it intact. We heard the woman say that she'd spent hundreds of dollars over the past few months, and hadn't returned anything until that night. She pulled out several receipts from her most recent transactions, which confirmed exactly what she said. The manager continued to treat her and her young child in one of the most appalling, demeaning ways we've ever seen. Her child became visibly nervous, and you could see her physical dicomfort and shock at the way this man was treating her. We overheard her say this manager encouraged her to purchase a lot of items at once and then return any that her family didn't love. She was clearly keeping the majority of Christmas decorations, and complying with the store return policy. In our opinion, it looked like this manager realized he was caught for changing the batteries and NOT exchanging the one item she previously brought back for the faulty motor (a plastic Christmas tree around $20), so he went on the attack immediately. It looked like the manager was at least actually exchanging the item this time. He took a new one out of packaging and gave it to her (rudely, aggressively, deliberately trying to make it look like she was a problem) so she could listen to the motor and confirm it worked. She said that it sounded great. Then the manager went and got another of the same item, but that was on display, and tried to give her that one instead. She caught him doing this and asked why he wasn't giving her the new item. He again went on the attack. It looked like this was due to being caught. He started to loudly criticize and attack her, making a big show of it. She appeared to be incredibly intimitated and embarassed. The manager finally agreed to give her the new item that he'd originally unwrapped and handed to her so she could turn it on and confirm the motor worked. The woman was visibly rattled and clearly wanted to get out of the shop with her child. We then saw the manager do something that made our jaws drop. He took the original item the woman brought back (for the second time because it had a faulty motor), took the batteries out, and put it in the styrofoam packaging that the new replacement item came from, and put that in her bag to take home. The woman didn't notice what he did. We don't understand how Gethsemane has someone like this working in their store. It's definitely made us not want to return to Gethsemane and continue to share our experience of what we witnessed last night.

My favorite garden center in all of Chicago. The staff there are so incredibly helpful and kind. If you have a question, the staff member will even ask around the various departments to find the best answer for you. Amazing selection of annuals, perennial, trees and bushes, seeds, bulbs, tools, soil, mulch, and more. Oh, and I can’t forget about the houseplants and pots! Everything is very well cared for. And don’t forget to go to Wild Pansy, their gift shop where you can find decorative home items, blankets and scarves, paper goods, books and more. They have awesome sales throughout the year that you cannot miss.

I have had nothing but good experiences with Gethsemane.Day-to-day purchases have always been fine, they are well and competently staffed, stock a decent selection and have reasonable prices. There have also been a couple of occasions on which I needed unusual help (diagnosing plant problems and special orders) in which I think that Gethsemane went far and above my expectations - in these situations they were extremely helpful and their advice was spot-on.I would recommend this business highly.

This place has the best pot arrangements I’ve seen in a while! Lots of pumpkins and gourds to choose from too.
