Iqra is known as a preeminent Islamic bookstore in the region. They have a wide range of English language and Urdu language books. The Arabic language section was a little small and basic. But it was better than anything else in the region. In fact, after my recent visit to Halalco in Northern Virginia and seeing how much they've changed, Iqra might be the best Islamic Bookstore in the country. It's better than any I've seen in New York City or elsewhere in the country. The shopkeep was amazingly friendly and accommodating. He's a very nice guy. I really enjoyed my visit and the next time I'm in Chicago I'll be sure to stop by. Bookshops like it are a rapidly vanishing breed in the USA.

They have a very large collection of Islamic books for kids/adults, kids learning toys, picture books, etc. Also good variety of American based books and Pakistani based books. I was looking for a very specific color-coded tajweed Quran with IndoPak font, and ended up finding a better option at the bookstore down the street. But overall this is a good place to look for your Quran and Islamic book needs.

Yesterday, the first day of Ramadan (also first Ramadan I am celebrating as a Muslim with my children) I brought them in to purchase some books and etc My kids were walking by the Quran aisle and touched the books, one of which did fall. I picked it up right away and was using that moment as a teaching moment for my children. A man that worked there wearing all white walked over and had a look on his face and said “these are Quran, you can’t do that” it was the way he said it with so much annoyance and in a rude manner that I was so embarrassed. He looked so angry. I thought I was reading him wrong till my 4 year old asked why he was angry with you mommy. Then my son started crying over a toy a couple mins later and took my kids to leave the store as I did not want to disturb anyone - this man stood there watching us as we left - it sounds small and insignificant but the way he approached us and the way he watched us made me feel like I stole something. I came to love Islam because how beautiful the faith is - but one thing I love is how gentle prophet Muhammad sws was with children. How he approached even those who did wrong or threw trash on him with a smile on his face. I understand the HUGE significance or the Quran being touched or falling - but these were children who have never known Islam. I was teaching them when he walked over and he could have used that as a teaching moment. I will never come back to this store with my kids. This may sound so petty and small but when you’re new to a faith and so intimidated to come in to a store and setting you’re not familiar with - then something like that happens it just was very saddening. I’m sure you have cameras. My kids were not rude. Not rowdy. Well behaved. As soon as my son was getting loud I removed him from the store - I’m not the type of mom to put up with ill manners from my kids - But they are kids. If they touched a Quran they had no idea. They’re children and I was teaching them. I had picked up what fell before he could walk over. I felt so embarrassed. The way you approach people matters. You never know what someone is going through. I had to fight so many people over my faith - kindness matters! I have experienced bad customer service many times, never left a review. But what I experienced yesterday and the way it made me feel - and my kids feel - even for that brief moment was so embarrassing. There was no kindness in his voice. Our prophet Muhammad sws would have come with a smile on his face and used this as a teaching moment. Please learn from him. I understand we are all fasting and days may be hard - but the way you look at somebody and make someone feel matters. I’m not an emotional woman nor have ever left a review anywhere - but my daughter refused to go back in the store after that. How sad. Ended up going to another store where they were so kind and so helpful, recognized I was trying to look for things and helped me and my kids with so much kindness and gentle demeanor. May Allah put kindness and compassion in our hearts this Ramadan.
