Lookingglass Theatre Company is a nationwide leader in creating and presenting new, cutting-edge theatrical works. They also share their ensemble-based theatrical techniques with Chicago-area students and teachers through their Education and Community Programs. Reviewers describe the theatre as beautifully done, with a convenient unisex bathroom and affordable, hilarious plays. One production, Circus Quixote, received high praise for its whimsical tale, fantastic and talented cast, and excellent acrobatics, music, set design, and costumes. Audiences found the show to be a "truth to the characters" and a favorite rendition of the classic story. Visitors had a "great experience" at the intimate, inspiring theatre. The front-of-house team was awesome, and the high-caliber performances were "humbling" in their execution. While some felt the circus elements were a bit "forced and underwhelming" compared to Cirque du Soleil, overall the show was "beautifully executed" with "little moments happening throughout each scene." One reviewer's teenage daughter, a "difficult critic," said she would "absolutely love to go back."
The theater is a wonderful space. It is in the building with the old water pumping station that survived the Chicago Fire. The seats are all stadium style seating, and there is not a bad seat in the house. We saw Untitled Vampire Play and it was wonderful. Great cast, amazing and funny script and a fun set.
