*Update*
I’m pretty happy to say that the GM of Penelope’s contacted me to rectify the situation below. I’m all about uplifting small businesses that make things right. 5 stars for quality clothes, and a business that cares about its customers.
I’ve spent a good amount of money at Penelope’s, but unfortunately I’ll have to find a new shop. I purchased a pair of $70 shorts 9 days ago, but ultimately I decided they weren’t for me (Didn’t wear them outside of trying them on/brought them back in perfect condition). I took the pesky tag off when trying them on, and tossed the tag. I thought to myself, well I have the digital receipt from them, so I should be able to return them still…. I was wrong. I was denied a refund because the tag was gone, and I guess they can’t print a new one, or make a makeshift tag in this scenario…. (thinking to myself, what happens when a tag accidentally gets ripped off in their dressing rooms, do they lose money because they can’t sell the piece anymore?)
Anywho, I was verbally told that in order to receive a refund I must have a tag despite having a legitimate receipt and being back within 21 days. A loss is a loss at the end of the day, but I just wish that either the cashier would explain the return policy at checkout to customers, or the policy would be printed on the digital receipt/email. Instead, I had to find the policy out from the sales associate when I came back to this side of town, or just know to check their website.
All in all bummer of an experience.

I love browsing this boutique and not having anyone bother me. Sometimes I like what I see, and sometimes it’s boring.

Another fun boutique and gift shop. Women and baby clothing, hair accessories, earrings, jewelry, homewares, decor, purses, greeting cards, candles, and more. There are fitting rooms and there was a cute dog. The adult clothing is sorted by color which is aesthetic. Plenty of fun things at which to look.

Very disappointed to walk in and have a few sales associates stare directly at me and not speak or acknowledge my presence when I said hello. Only to have a white woman walk in a few minutes after who was greeted with a friendly welcome/hello. I’ll never return to this store again because of this experience. Do better.

Imagine walking into a store, it’s empty, except for three sales people, but not one of them even acknowledges your presence, like you’re a ghost. Then as you look around the store they stand 5 feet behind you straightening up every hanger or item you touch. It’s a very confusing experience because it’s not a designer store, they sell $20 t-shirts, and they could probably sell a lot more if they were kind.

Great merchandise for sale, but experienced several microaggressions. When shopping there, my friend, who is white, was greeted by a Sales Associate when shopping at their sales rack outside, and was offered to get a fitting room started. I, on the other hand, was not spoken to, or offered any help. On the way out, this same Sales Associate did not say goodbye to me, as she did with other customers.

One of the best things about living in Wicker Park. Penelopes contributes greatly to the culture of the neighborhood and the staff are genuinely kind. Penelopes and Gemini are truly some of my favorite places in the city. Everybody should visit this locally owned shop!

really cute selection! unique items. I did not find any clothing in my soze as a mid to plus sized woman, but that is normal for boutique type stores

We walked into this shop because of cute things we noticed in the window. We started to look around while 3 people stood at the register and just gabbed, not even acknowledging our presence. At one point, I was even at the register looking at the stickers on the counter, standing directly in front of the guy working Sat. March 25th about 1:00pm. Not once, did we get any type of greeting, any offer of assistance, nor any eye contact. And yet, when a woman walked in, she immediately received a "hello". We took note that she was Caucasian, whereas we are not. There were a few things we wanted to purchase, but because of this encounter, or shall I say non-encounter, we definitely didn't want to support this "business".

I have a love hate relationship with this store. Sometimes it's killer. Sometimes it's a dud, but I own several of their pieces. It's just hard to shop in men's since the section tends to be stylistically very limited and a little Samey. Similar thoughts are had about Gemini their sister store that tends to carry all of a specific set of browns and blacks out of brands like Our Legacy which produce a breadth of content. Their knickknacks certainly shouldn't be ignored.But if I were to give you any advice? Look, and if you dont like a something wait until the next season. It'll usually be cheaper/in company with better variety.
