“The Gun Doctor is an great place for a reasonably priced, convenient, and straightforward FFL transfer. However, they are not too educated on PICA. I don’t blame them for this because PICA is confusing, and I understand that they are just trying to be safe. From my understanding, they do not realize that the threaded-barrel rule applies only to semiautomatic handguns and not rifles. I saw a Springfield Hellion CA-compliant model at my local Range USA that was around $2,000, but I found a cheaper one online that was also CA/IL compliant. Since the listing specifically stated that it was CA/IL compliant, I asked The Gun Doctor if they would transfer it for me. The lady who works there told me that it had a threaded barrel and an adjustable stock, so it was illegal and they would not be able to transfer it. I showed her a picture of the Hellion on the wall at Range USA in Hanover Park, as well as the online listing, which clearly stated that the firearm was IL compliant. Despite that, they still refused the transfer. An older gentleman who works there also told me that it was very suspicious that Range USA was selling this firearm. Since then, I have purchased the threaded-barrel Hellion and a Smith & Wesson FPC, which is also threaded, from Range USA. I have also purchased a threaded-barrel 10/22 from Cabela’s. I don’t want to tell the people at The Gun Doctor that they are wrong or create any unnecessary escalation because they are convenient for me, and I still want to support this local business. I wouldn’t dare ask them again to transfer a rifle with a threaded barrel, or an integrated-compensator handgun, for that matter. For firearms like that, I would go to Maslon Armory in Addison. Roger is very knowledgeable, easy to work with, and has a very low transfer fee. It isn’t as convenient for me because he is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but he knows what he’s doing. I like supporting local businesses, but sometimes they make it difficult to do so. That being said, I am not blaming The Gun Doctor for this as there are many other FFLs that wouldn’t transfer the Hellion, according to the ILguns Reddit. PICA is complicated, and I understand why an FFL would want to be cautious rather than risk transferring something they believe could be illegal. This is more of the states fault than anyone else’s. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from using their services. They have been convenient and reasonably priced for me; I just know that for certain firearms, I would rather use an FFL who is more familiar with PICA.”
