About Humane Society of Southern Illinois
The Humane Society of Southern Illinois (HSSI) is a small, non-profit open-access facility that has been operating since 1956. They accept surrendered animals and occasionally serve as a holding facility for the Jackson County Animal Control. HSSI takes in approximately 3,000 animals yearly and works diligently to find homes for all of them. The staff is described as great, caring, and helpful, going the extra mile to support adopters even after the adoption process. The shelter is overcrowded and has to euthanize for space, but they strive to care for all the animals and facilitate successful adoptions. Reviewers praise HSSI as a wonderful place to adopt pets, with healthy, young, and cute animals available. The shelter has also received positive feedback for its fostering program.

I adopted my cat, Fern, and my dog, Cache, from HSSI back in 2019 and 2020. It was a great experience both times.

We had to bring in a stray kitten and NOBODY would take him... Until I brought him here and they were all so sweet! Thank you!

Great staff, caring people who care about their pets and make sure they are with you every step of the way when adopting a pet and helping with questions even after adoption
