Poorly marked trails. Maps don't match reality.

The map of the park is very confusing and the labels of the park isn’t very frequent and does not coincide with the map. The walk between the gorge isn’t very people friendly due to the obstacles.

Beautiful park. I definitely recommend hiking down where the Lake Falls are to hike down in the lower dells. Very worthwhile. You can cover the dells bluff trail un under 2 hours. It depends how much you go up and down the stairs. Be prepared with proper footwear for the mud. Definitely worth it to hike down to some spots though below!

Good place for hiking and camping, the challenging hike is the best, wear good sturdy tennis shoes.

Our family has been to and enjoyed Starved Rock a couple times previously but never went to Matthiessen. This place was really fun. It was just after a rainy night so the trails were muddy and slippery in places, but hopping across stones and logs along the river was a blast for the whole family.Restrooms: Restrooms are at the main entrance.Dog-friendliness: Saw a lot of people with their dogs.Picnic area: There is a picnic area with many wooden tables in a covered canopy near the parking lot main entrance.

If you want to have fun here, you must accept that you will get muddy. I recommend just having your kids abandon their shoes early on. Please don't yell at them for being kids and enjoying life. It's why you take these adventures with them. You might get wet-and that's really ok. They might get wet. It's fine. This place was more crowded than I prefer on a hike, but we had an adventure crossing to the waterfall, and it was very beautiful and just the right level of challenging. There are a lot of stairs here. Not a few. A lot. My 4 year old made it up, but it was beyond my 2 year old.Overall I really enjoyed this hike.Restrooms: Large public restroom available at the trailheadDog-friendliness: Lots of dogs here, be prepared to be polite and clean up after themPicnic area: Picnic tables, trash cans, metal grills available

This is mine and my kids favorite hiking spot! Any season great! I love that you can really get close to nature. Pro tip especially if your bringing kids. Bring extra shoes ,socks and pants along. Also some bags for your muddy shoes for the ride home. Don't worry about getting wet and dirty allow your kids to roam and let yourself do the same.

I visited here a few years ago and it was such a memorable experience! The waterfall was very nice- you could walk all the way up to it! Go after a few nice spring rainfalls to get the best experience! Cant wait to go back!

Cascade falls are well worth the hike.
