Council Hill Station is a charming and historic venue located near Galena, Illinois, approximately 12 miles northeast of Galena and close to Scales Mound. Established in 1854, this site features a unique 1850s general store and railway station, along with remnants like a silo, woolen mill ruins, and a barn, all nestled along the east fork of the Galena River. The location is known for its rustic charm, scenic setting, and lively atmosphere, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The venue hosts live music year-round, including the famous picnic basket concerts on weekends, where visitors can bring their own food and drinks, enjoy lawn chairs, and listen to music for a small entrance fee. During these events, there are also country breakfasts and summer barn dances, offering a fun, relaxed experience similar to an outdoor festival. It is considered Illinois' version of Woodstock, with a laid-back vibe and plenty of opportunities for people-watching. Many guests appreciate the gracious and friendly host, who takes time to share the history of the building and make visitors feel at home. The venue offers a casual and relaxed setting with guitars, music, beer, and memories. It is also a popular location for special events, including weddings, where rustic charm and excellent hospitality are highlights. Overall, Council Hill Station is a unique place that combines history, music, and community in a beautiful rural setting.
I have visited Council Hill Station a handful of times and it is always a great experience - listening to talented musicians, meeting new people in a relaxed and casual setting, and being treated so graciously by Jamie as he takes time to fill you in on the history of the building while also making you feel at home
