Thankful I had the opportunity to stop in at this beautiful independent bookstore, located right on the outside of Chicago. Barbar's Bookstore hosted an author event for Porsha Williams "Pursuit of Porsha" novel. From my first experience, to actually having the opportunity to meet Ms. Williams at the store, I had an amazing professional, kind and friendly interactions with both the team members at the bookstore as well as with Ms. William's team.Pursuit of Porsha, did not disappoint. The book was heartfelt, well written and enduring. Ms. William's Did an amazing job of taking the reader on a journey and a journey and explaining the how's and why's along the way. For the past few years or more, I have seen her on a wide media scale and it was very connecting to read about the journey getting there and who she is and was as a person before the person we would grow to learn to know. I highly recommend taking time to let this author into your world. Read she is kind and has an amazing story to share.

Barbara's Bookstore used to be a two-story operation. Although there is still a ceiling sign and arrow on the upper level indicating a second-floor location, the store is now on the lower level of Hawthorn. There are still cozy places to curl up and read a few pages of a recommended book before purchasing. I hope Barbara's a will have a solid home in Hawthorn 2.0. It would be sad to lose a business that has been serving the Chicago area for 59 years. See my earlier review (March 12, 2019) for details about Barbara's Bookstore.

Wonder where all the bookstores have gone? We just lost another one, Barnes & Noble, in our neighborhood. If you are a book lover, as I am, don't you just miss browsing through a book store and discovering a book that strikes your fancy? Well, Barbara's Bookstore is a survivor. There are locations from downtown Chicago to O'Hare International Airport to Burr Ridge to Vernon Hills to Glenview, even Boston, Massachusetts. The chain opened on Wells Street in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood in 1963. Now it's gone. But my wife and I were delighted to discover the location at 720 Hawthorn Center in the Hawthorn shopping mall in north suburban Vernon Hills. It's a two-story layout in a former Barnes & Noble that hopes to be a bellwether in a renovated shopping center. We suspect that Barbara's survives while other close because she finds unique locations, sponsors book signings by local authors and offers personal and friendly service. My wife enjoyed tracking down books by her favorite author, Michael Connelly. I sought out some history books, from Civil War to World War II to Alexander the Great. Barbara's is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, plenty of time to browse and kibitz and sip a cup of Hansa coffee. After nearly six decades, it still works.
