I went into Hoosier Eye Doctor for a scheduled examination as a new patient and arrived 10 minutes early to fill out paperwork. The staff were kind enough to let me inside (the appointment was scheduled at the time they open), but the kindness ended there. The receptionist was curt, and all of the other office staff seemed tense. I brushed it off because, whatever, people have bad days. A gentleman came in while I was waiting and was escorted to the examination room. My appointment was at 9am, and at 9:30 they did a glaucoma screening since I still had not been called back. After the guy working finished testing, I asked when I would be taken back. He said, “Probably in about 10-20 minutes, he’s just adjusting someone’s reading glasses. Shouldn’t be long!” When I told him that I didn’t think it was going to take an hour to be seen, that I had other appointments that day, he informed me that the appointment itself would be at least an hour because the doctor would have to dilate my eyes. I expected the appointment itself to be at least 45 minutes to an hour long, since I was a new patient, but I did not think that I was going to have to wait 40-50 minutes to get in. I told this guy that I would not be able to stay due to a tight schedule that day and he let out a giant sigh and said, “WELL, have a good day, Tasha,” slapped the table, and turned to work on something else. I’m monotoned, and pretty mild-mannered (not to say that I can’t sound crummy) but I don’t know why that was so frustrating to this guy? The reaction was a bit overzealous, and his tone was so rude. These people had never met me before, and they were very disrespectful. This, on top of waiting forever and everyone else seeming like they didn’t want to be there, made me want to get out of there as fast as possible. We’re all people who have bad days, weeks sometimes, and I get that- I honestly don’t expect much, but I felt unwelcome, and as if my time did not matter. I left pretty upset and scheduled elsewhere.I chose this place because friends have raved about the experienced optometrist has and his patient care, but I wouldn’t know because I never saw him. I’m sure that the doctor is great, but the staff- not so much. I don’t not recommend this place, but there are other places in Bloomington with great optometrists and office staff that will not effectively shoo you out the door when you show concern over wait time.

Truly the definition of 5 stars. Dr. Joe and the staff were extremely welcoming, comforting, and informative. I could tell they really cared about my health and they helped rule out every scare I had. I'm definitely coming back here - this is the best eye doctor in Bloomington by far. Thanks Hoosier Eye Doctor!

I'd just like to commend the office staff in Ellettsville for going above and beyond. After ordering some contact lenses online from a large retailer today, I received a call from the office. Someone had noticed our insurance hadn't been used during the transaction. I was able to notify the vendor to correct the problem before it finished processing. That staff member went above and beyond to take care of their patient. Kudos!

I have been a patient of Doctor Joe's for six years now. I first went here because my old doctor was no longer covered under my new insurance plan. I picked Hoosier Eye Doctor pretty randomly from the list of covered establishments. Since then I have been VERY happy with the service and attention here.Dr. Joe truly cares about the vision health of his patients. This attitude is shared by the office staff. They consistently go over and above my expectations.Five years ago I broke my glasses a day before my wedding. My prescription is odd enough to need a special order and couldn't be done with their in-house equipment. However Dr Joe said he would cut a "good enough to get me through" set of lenses. I could see during the wedding and pick up the new set the next week.Service like this is what keeps me coming back!

Dr. Joe and all of the Hoosier staff are amazing. Dr. Joe has saved my eyes/husband's eyes a few times now. The normal visits are thorough, and I've had two emergency situations personally in which these people have been top notch. I'm so sad I've moved 3 states away; Dr. Joe is just one of my favorite health care professionals; I grew attached to him.

I've been going to Hoosier Eye Doctor for several years now. The lead doctor, Dr. De Spirito is always the one I have seen. He has always been friendly and eager to answer questions. He seems to have a good relationship with his staff as well which I can appreciate. I've never had any complaints at all about the service, they get you in and do what needs to be done and they even offer you water while you wait. Last time I was in, he told me he did his doctorate in kid's vision (I can't remember the exact name) so it seems like a great place to bring your kids. They have a small play area for kids too!The location is really convenient which is another reason I always come back. I've never had an issue getting an appointment here which is great for Bloomington where I routinely have to get an appointment 2-3 months in advance. They have a good selection of lenses and they can order whatever you need too.

As a medical provider, I understand attention to detail, and the willingness to go above and beyond for patients. I have trusted Dr Joe DeSpirito and his excellent staff for my vision care needs for over 10 years and would recommend them without hesitation.

The BEST service I've had since I moved out here to Bloomington! The doctor and staff were so nice and they went the extra mile to make sure I got everything I needed in order for my vision to be great. I would definitely recommend anyone going here. You will not be disappointed

I called Hoosier Eye Doctor after a very frustrating day, attempting to make my regular eye appointment after my employers switched to new vision insurance and there was apparently issue in documentation. After everything was smoothed out, I began calling around to see if anyone else could help before I departed for a work event in San Francisco for the next two weeks. (My previous glasses were broken, it had been more than two years since my last appointment, and my regular office has horrible hours.) Dr. Joe answered the phone (lending a helping hand to his office staff!) and told me to come down TONIGHT. Him and his hardworking, kind staff got me into an exam, fixed my old broken glasses, and had his office in Ellettsville begin working on a new pair for me. This experience was like nothing I could have ever expected from a doctor's office - they obviously went above and beyond and I'm so excited to schedule my next appointment at this office!

Office hours listed incorrect. Not open until 9pm any day of the week. Pleasant office staff; prompt service on courtesy eye glass adjustment. I'll be back.

Took my little girl here. They obviously were not good with small children and she was scared and also got an eye infection after they dilated her eyes. She had to go to family doctor twice to clear up infection. Will never be returning

Approximately 5 years ago, I took my oldest daughter to see Dr. Joe, to try and diagnose a vision problem that several other local Optometrist had missed. After her first appointment, Dr. Joe accurately diagnosed my daughter, prescribed the corrective prescription eyewear, and provided necessary vision therapy with Dr. Tondel (in office vision therapist). I have COMPLETE confidence in Dr. Joe, not only as a great eye doctor, but as a kind and compassionate person. Our family are loyal customers.

I had an excellent experience here with my whole family, including a 3 and a 4 year old. I have been to many eye doctors and felt most comfortable speaking to and dealing with the staff here. Dr. Joe was very friendly and straight forward. The whole staff was GREAT with my kids! Edit: The woman who was fitting my eye glasses had to heat and reheat my frames so many times that the black paint on the rims began to peel off only a week after getting them.

My kids have seen Dr. Joe and Dr. Bell. We have been very happy with both doctors. Dr. Joe diagnosed my daughter with a condition that the IU School of Op had overlooked. It meant my daughter needed to wear glasses at the age of three. Dr. Bell was great with my two year old son. We really like their new location right outside of Ellettsville too.
