My hair experience at Aveda Frederic's Institute was horrible. I went in for highlights and haircut and, somehow, both were horrendous. The haircut was completely uneven, the highlights looked like early 2000s chunky streaks. They were incredibly uneven, I genuinely do not think the student had any experience giving someone a balayage. To top it off, the instructor gave me the worst bangs I have ever had. I asked for face-framing pieces and she ignored that. The worst part is that they messed up and refused to acknowledge it; they really looked me dead in the eye and said it looked amazing. While I understand the services are provided by students, I believe the students should have better instructors, too. One of the students said to me, and I quote, "this isn't my passion, I don't even want to do this, I'm just good at it." It seemed there were too many students and not enough instructors to properly assess the services; I can't say the instructors were all that professional, either, given the outcome of my hair. Their customer service was courteous and kind when I asked for a refund which went to repairing the surface damage.

There are several reasons why I choose to get my hair cut from Aveda! I think a lot of people overlook it because it's in a busy mall and because it's a cosmetology school but I love that I am able to make an appointment, pay $17, and get stupendous service. Sure, it takes a long time and it's a student cutting my hair but if you're not high maintenance, there is no concern at all! They are able to learn and have willing customers/volunteers for them to practice, each student has always been super friendly and gracious for me coming in. Plus, the instructors are monitoring their work so I don't see it ever going badly. They offer a complimentary mini massage and facial which I love. In the most recent service menu, they've started offering memberships for facials, massages, and blowouts. They're super affordable and their reward program gives you points for booking in advance and scheduling ahead. Definitely check it out!

D is the greatest. There is a reason she is called an expert stylist my hair is very thick and fine, only D seems to be able to cut it in a way that makes me look like a movie star and ten years younger.

I really enjoyed my time here and plan to come back. Where to begin? For a whopping 17 dollars, I got a full haircut and blow dry. On top of that, I got a mini shoulder chair massage (awesome), and mini facial. The room they shampoo you in, the blue room, is so relaxing. There's soothing music, a ceiling that looks like the night sky, overall wonderful aesthetic. You're shampooed while laying down, and it is wonderful. I added a hydrating hair mask for 5 dollars, which my hair really needed. My stylist, Tayler, was very sweet and did a great job. I went in for a simple trim but would trust the stylists at Aveda with more drastic cuts or color after my experience. The two things I will mention that set this apart from a regular salon: you do need to carve out extra time. I was in and out in about 90 minutes, but I also knew this going in and didn't mind at all. The stylists are also required to bring their instructors by for every step of the way to ensure everything is done correctly. The instructor made one minor adjustment to my cut and other than that everything was perfect. She made sure that I was happy with how my stylist did, again not a big deal to me. They use quality products, the overall environment was very nice, and they don't just throw someone out there who has never cut hair before in their life to leave you potentially looking like a hot mess. It's a great way to save money on regular trims, and also help some students get the experience they need to grow into a cosmetology career, everyone wins. :)

Ever since I moved to Indy (2012), this is the only place I've gotten my hair cut and colored. I have never been disappointed with the cut and colored. The girls have always done a great job and with the assistance of their instructor, it can't go wrong. However, I tried the bridal hair and make up, let saaaaaaay, I never showed up for my final hair/makeup. I'll just stick with getting my hair cut and colored here. No style or make up since their training is more on hair....not make up.

This was my first time coming here for a haircut and I absolutely loved it! For only $18, you also get shampoo, back massage, and mini facial in the blue room. This room was very dim and played peaceful instrumental music. Perfect for some relaxation! You also get to lay down for the shampoo instead of having to sit and tilt your head back. Kati cut my hair and did amazing. This is a school so instructors are around to keep track of the progress. My whole appointment took a little under 2 hours. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for an affordable place for a haircut!

The Aveda Institute holds themselves to the highest of standards. They are professional, attentive, and genuinely caring. The atmosphere is calming and I always feel great upon leaving. The students always do a great job cutting my hair, and their instructors always approve and check on their work -- I am NEVER concerned about getting a bad haircut just because it's a school. The Fredric's Institute is by far my favorite Aveda Institute I have been to, I recommend it to everyone!

Clean and professional setting. Students were engaging and well trained in products and techniques for facials, and massages. Highly recommend spa services and hair was packed but seemed to be running smoothly w a variety of services.

D is Amazing! She is not just a hair stylist, she meets you where you are at (on all levels), holds an incredible vision, and leads you to it with her artistry. Your hair is a reflection of who you truly are, something D can see, and help you to see through her gift. Seriously, she's incredible. Not only that, her products are all organic, which means no nasty chemicals on your head which if you ask me is pretty important. I am so deeply pleased with my new hair, I am a client for life. She's amazing. Thank you D!!!

Got pedicures with my mom and my sister. My student was very eager to get started and got right to work. She finished about 20 minuets before my mom and sister were done but my toes still look great. The other students were awesome and paid attention to details and customer satisfaction. My mom's student even noticed that my mom hums when she is happy! Prices seemed just a tad more expensive than a regular nail place, but quality Aveda products were used and you are not allowed to tip students so it balances out.

I had a fantastic, frugal, first-time experience at the Aveda Institute. I had spent years dropping big bucks on hair cuts and color. A recent poor experience at a fancier salon and a bout of frugality/minimalism led me to scheduling an appointment at Aveda. For the great value of $17, I received a stylish, modern-looking haircut that I didn't need to frustratingly "fix" on my own when I got home with a pair of dull nail clippers. My layered short hair is a little more complicated than the standard blowout/trim, but my stylist did very well...they even got my bangs right, which is a rarity. Highlighted Items: -$17 (no tips allowed) for the haircut, which included a back massage, neck & head massage, and a hot towel facial, all with Aveda's herbal-smelling line of products; - The "Blue" shampoo & relaxation room was so cool; you get to lay down while being shampoo'd and look at the night sky, while crickets chirp in the background; -My entire experience took about one (1) hour, not too shabby considering all the additional services thrown in; -The stylist's "educator" checked in a few times, but did not overly monitor the situation. Apparently my bang-cutting was a teachable moment, where about five (5) students crowded around to see the educator do his magic; -I probably will never see my trainee stylist again due the school's curriculum & rotating scheduling, but such is life. -There was no pressure to purchase Aveda products. With my Aveda haircut and box color at home, I'm saving $120-140 per appointment...too bad Castleton Mall's tempting wares are next door.

I visited Aveda at the recommendation from my fiancee. I did not leave disappointed! I was able to call right as they opened one morning and got an appointment for a few hours later. My student was great at listening and double-checking every move with me, which I appreciated. Yes, it takes longer than going to a regular salon, but it was nice to give this student the experience. Especially since I was the only male patron! I loved the extras that come with the haircut. The back and neck massage was super relaxing. The mini-facial during my shampoo was also nice. Can't wait to return!

A much nicer experience than I expected. My stylist Jenny came out to greet me and sat me down at her chair. She asked how I wanted my hair cut, clarified details, then took me to the back to wash my hair. The room you get your hair washed is dimly lit, quiet, and calming. You lay down to get your hair washed and you get to stare at the starry night ceiling. A facial comes complementary with the wash but I opted out. After the wash we went back to the station and she cut my hair. The stations are a little too close together, there's not enough room for stylists to move around. The station behind me had a customer and since her stylist was standing behind her, Jenny had to turn my chair sideways (away from the mirror) to be able to stand behind me to cut my hair. She finished and asked how I liked it, I said I wanted the back a little shorter so she fixed that. The service is very friendly and customer oriented. They make sure you leave happy. The price is so cheap for a good cut, they don't even accept tips although you can make a donation instead.
