Using a throw away account and it will make sense why. As a Jew, antisemitism is nothing new to me. I have experienced it all my life and is almost never surprising when it does occur. However, a few months ago I overheard the two gentlemen next to me at the dumbbells spewing all sorts of ignorant information regarding Israel to each other. Civilly, and some would say courageously, I spoke up and told them I didn't appreciate what they were saying and to be more mindful of what you say in public. Although I consider the gym a place to get away from these sorts of things, I still run into these two individuals time to time which intrudes on my peace of mind, but I manage to deal with it. Fast forward to today and there is a gentleman on the bench press with not one, but two swastikas on his leg. Not to mention an ankle monitor too. I mean am I wrong to think it's messed up that I am a regular at my local YMCA and these are my experiences in just a span of 2.5 months? I understand Indy has a small Jewish population and many will disregard this, but I am sharing my experiences in hope for some sort of awareness and possibly change not only on a local level but also national, as well as wanting to save any other individuals from experiencing what I am.

I have been attending the A for 10+ years, and it is a great gym to be a part of. The staff is great and always has a positive attitude, with a smile on their face!

Quiet, clean. Never have to wait for equipment or squeeze into a class. It's small enough to know everyone there.

My favorite little YMCA! Parking is around the corner so you have to walk, be sure to ask for a pass at the front desk. I recommend parking on the street your first time. Layout is a little weird, but if you're trying to get in a serious workout it beats Irsay by a mile (because its not ridiculously crowded). I like it!

“Chuck” at the front desk is rude. I’ve heard hellos and good mornings spoken to him. He chooses to not speak back. That’s his choice. But, as a representative of the YMCA, I find it offensive. There is also no convenient parking. I have to pay $1.00 or more a day, that I work out here plus my membership.

This YMCA location is cozy, clean, and nearly all-inclusive! I chose this Y based on the location and convenience and have grown to love the friendliness and calmness present within this facility. I find that this location is never too busy and has all of the amenities that one needs for a great workout. They have cardio equipment, a sauna, weights, and plenty of machines. They also have 3 studios upstairs that can be used for group fitness classes or working out alone between classes. They have equipment that allows for members to complete virtual classes in the studios as well! I personally really enjoy the group fitness classes offered at this location. The instructors and other members are beyond friendly, welcoming, and motivating. The classes are also not typically too full which allows for a comfortable workout experience. The only downside to this location is the lack of parking at certain times of day due to the lack of a parking lot. Early in the morning, there is sometimes street parking available, but you may have to park a few blocks away if you come later in the day. The addition of a parking lot would be amazing but until then, I think the history and coziness within the Athenaeum makes searching for parking worth it! All in all, if you're looking for a friendly, not too crowded, place to exercise, this is it!

Too casual of a culture.Difficult to get in and out and do what you want because so many are texting and relaxing

Really inconvenient access for those who aren’t perfectly able bodied. Called to ask the staff about parking, as the lot adjacent to the building says it it a tow zone if you don’t have a ticket. Staff wasn’t able to give clear instructions for where parking was or where a handicap entrance is. The building is also surrounded by one way streets, so if you don’t know exactly where you are going, it’s a nightmare. The Irsay, Ransburg or Avondale locations are all infinitely easier to navigate. The Irsay is best equipped for those who have mobility challenges.
