The "fins" at the bottom of the rocket statue outlines the career of Gus Grissom. It was worth taking the time to read it all.We also went to the Memorial at Spring Mill State Park. There's an admission fee to enter the park but going to the Memorial is free.

"Gus" Grissom is one of the original seven astronauts. He was the second American to fly into space. He was also the second American to fly in space twice. He was born and raised in Mitchell which is why they have constructed this monument in his memory and honor. The monument itself is a 44 foot tall limestone monument that represents the Redstone rocket and his mercury space capsule. It was dedicated in downtown Mitchell in 1981. There is a large parking lot located by the monument. It was really snowy the day that I visited so I was unable to get in very close and walk around. Around the bottom of the monument there are several panels telling the story of Grissom's life as an astronaut. This is a pretty cool place to stop and visit if you are interested in the history of space but it really isn't a place you would spend a lot of time at. Another cool spot you could visit in the same day is just down the road at Spring Mill State Park. You could always swing by Gus' boyhood home which is located on Grissom Street in Mitchell also.

Pretty impressive for a small town Memorial to its native son. It’s very well done.

You MUST visit this memorial during your trip to Mitchell if you're a space buff/lover, and don't forget to visit the Memorial Museum in the state park just East of town, they are the perfect experience to fulfill anyone who dreamt of going to the stars.

Mitchell, Indiana is the birthplace of one of the original seven astronauts: Virgil "Gus" Grissom. So it seems fitting that a large monument of one of his spacecraft was carved to honor his accomplishments. The park is surrounded with brick and rosebeds. In the center, a recreation (not to scale, but pretty large) of his "Unsinkable Molly Brown" ship that was the first 2 man Gemini project where Grissom performed the first manual maneuver in space. Around the base of the rocket are eight panels which tell the history of Grissom's rise through fame as an astronaut. Tragically, Grissom was killed in a launch pad fire in 1967 along with two other astronauts on Apollo 1. Although the grounds are maintained, the monument could use a good power washing to clean up the weathering that has made the panels discolored. Review #2914
