I went here twice with my daughters, and I so loved the gardens that we walked through. I loved the attention that this stewardess gave us on the references in history of the place. I read her books and passed them on to my daughters, and they loved them. I have copies of them now at my own cottage. If you haven't been there, please go. It's like revisiting your childhood, or a childhood dream. They keep the place up really nice.

Was there decades ago before all the development. Beautiful geese and swans on the lake back then and very serene. Recently went there all I can hear are boat motors and traffic from the highway. The trees have a nice canopy.

A Indiana State Historic site in Rome Indiana on Lake Sylvan. There's ample parking in a large lot. A short walk takes you to Gene & her daughter's memorial. A little further on is the visitor center, which used to be the carriage house. It's small, but there's displays & a little gift shop. The historic cabin a another short walk. We were too late for the tour, which suited my husband! You can walk around the grounds & gardens for free . There's a dock for a look at the lake & a short boardwalk trail. The gardens are beautiful & well tended. It was worth the drive just to see them. There were other trails across the road, but we didn't take them.

This is the home of Gene Stratton-Porter, an American author. If you like looking at historic houses, this one will please. Small admission charge for a house tour, or you can wander the grounds on your own at no charge.

We had a great day at the GSP estate. We plan on going back for the Christmas event. The paths are easy to navigate. Little quiet places to just sit & enjoy the scenery and wildlife. The tour was also great. But the grounds are open you don't have to take the tour. Gardens were amazing also. If you are in the area or looking for a day trip I highly recommend.

I began reading Gene's books in grade school and was fascinated with her novels and knowledge of God's creation. As a tomboy who collected critters and climbed trees, I loved reading about another lady who loved being outdoors. As a teacher, I raised caterpillars to butterflies and had chrysalis in the classroom and in my home. Seeing the home she designed and worked in plus the extensive gardens and adjoining woods trails was an absolute delight. Hearing of her interests & accomplishments as a progressive woman at the turn of the century whose husband affirmed her gifts and talents was inspiring. The visitor center has some of her notebooks and logs for visitors to page through and sitting areas to sit and imagine what she saw and heard. Every person we met seemed delighted to be a part of the Gene Stratton-Porter experience. Their enthusiasm and detailed information made for a wonderful visit. Our guide was interesting and added many details to her story which I had not known before. Gene and her daughter Jeannette are buried here beneath her favorite oak tree.

If you're looking for an intimate wedding or event venue, Gene Stratton-Porter SHS is unmatched. We recently held our wedding ceremony in the gardens, and though it rained, I wouldn't have changed a thing. You can't beat the beauty of the gardens with the trees surrounding you, the lake just a few feet away and the wisteria hanging beautifully above the walkway. Also, the site's director, Tiffany, communicated so well with us throughout the whole planning process and was so helpful the day of, especially when we had to make split-second decisions because of the weather forecast.
