I have never had a good experience at there emergency room. But my latest experience was absolutely terrible. I took my puppy in because she had not eaten in two-three days after having gotten into a bag of treats. I was worried she had ingested the plastic from the bag. About 5 days prior to this visit she had gone and had her vaccines including her parvo vaccine. When I arrived, they wouldn’t even let us in the clinic with a parvo test. I repeatedly told them she had just been vaccinated and that the test would not be reliable because of this. However they insisted. Her test came back positive, because of her vaccines a couple days prior. They refused to take the X-ray to see if she had a blockage. They tried telling me they wanted to hospitalize her which I declined. They proceeded to give her an injection of anti-nausea meds that I repeatedly said she didn’t need. And sent me home with some, again she did not need them. And to kick it all off, they prescribed fluids, however they did not give any there. They sent me home with the bag of fluids to do at home. I called her vet the next business day and by then she was fine. She did NOT have parvo. Her primary vet agreed with me on that. But Purdue would not listen to anything I said to them.

This review is for the orthopedic specialists at Purdue Veterinary School and Small Animal Hospital. Our dog, Pancho, had corrective surgery on 1/10/24 to fix an angular limb deformity. Our experience with Purdue was incredible. Thank you Dr. Kim, Dr. Rochat, Dr. Nelson, RVT Anna Ihrie, and Rhett McCutchan. You all took such good care of Pancho and of us - and now he is on the road to a better quality of life.Pancho developed an angular limb deformity during his first year. At first his paws just looked like normal dachshund mix paws - but it quickly became clear that his paw was not growing normally. We took him to a specialist near us who said it would take three separate surgeries to correct the deformity and would cost ~ $10,000. Obviously, this was not something that we could afford, but more importantly, we did not want to put our little guy through three major surgeries. We then worked on giving him the best quality of life to accommodate the deformity, such as using a stroller, so he could still enjoy longer walks, pain management with heat pads and massages. But around his fourth birthday, it became obvious that things were just going to get harder for him as he got older. That’s when a friend told us about Purdue Veterinary School. She had brought her dog who had a rare form of cancer here, and said they had an innovative approach to fixing complex health issues. So we drove 2.5 hours down to Lafayette and met with the orthopedic team to see what options we could explore. We were pleasantly surprised when they told us that they have done many surgeries like this before, and Panchos paw could be fixed in one surgery, and it would cost us less than half the initial price we were quoted! We set up the appointment and were eager but also nervous as this would be the first time Pancho was getting a major surgery. To say that the team at Purdue was spectacular would be an understatement. We were very nervous about the entire procedure, and they took extra time and care to answer all of our questions, and reassure us that Pancho would get the best care possible. They have a huge team of orthopedic surgeons and board-certified anesthesiologists that would be closely monitoring Pancho to ensure his safety during the almost 2 hour surgery. They called us the morning of the surgery to check in, before the surgery started, after the surgery was completed and would call every evening while Pancho was recovering to give an update on how he was doing. We could tell that he was in very good hands, and that they were giving him lots of love, which made the entire process so much easier for us. They were also very transparent about what medications they would be giving Pancho, what the entire surgery wouldn’t entail, and we were able to meet most of his surgery team beforehand, which was really nice. When we finally got to pick up Pancho, they were very clear about his care instructions and continued to call after we went home to check in with us. The entire surgery ended up costing us just under $4000 and Pancho is already trying to use his paw and is in high spirits. We are so thankful we found Purdue Small Animal Hospital and will be recommending them to anyone who is looking for specialty care for their pets. The only piece of feedback that we would give, and this is minor, is that there was a little bit of confusion about which day Pancho would actually be having the surgery. We found out when he dropped him off that his surgery would actually be the next day, which meant that we had to pick him up later than we had planned for. Luckily, our accommodation was a friend we were staying with, so we were able to adjust. But this may have been a little bit harder for those who need to stay at a hotel and are coming from far away. Again, very minor and did not have a huge impact for us, but worth noting for future patients to clarify expectations and timeline around when the surgery is taking place and when they should be ready to pick up their pet.THANK YOU PURDUE SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL!

We put my kitten down here months ago and even though it was far more expensive than i thought, the staff was very very nice and caring and let us be with our kitty while he was getting euthanized. the vet also gave us time to say goodbyes and even stepped out of the room to give us privacy. i would definitely recommend this vet, they know what they’re doing and they have excellent interpersonal skills.

I now understand why this place has such bad reviews. I had an appointment with my cat today and received zero service. We were checked in by a student and taken to a room. She said to "expect a long day" since they need to run lots of tests. I said that's fine, that's what we are here for. Well we were put in a room for 2.5 hrs with no one seeing us! The student said that a "senior clinician" would be coming but never did. I called the front desk since we were in an "isolation room" and there was literally no one around, and asked, what is going on? They said, "oh someone should have seen you." So the student comes back with another student just to tell us there's no time for tests today and we would need to stay overnight and come back tomorrow. Our appointment was at noon! And they couldn't even bother to see my cat after I've waited 3 weeks for this appointment and drove from the Chicago area and waited 2.5 hrs in this room. So we left! Then they have nerve to call me and say I owe them $210 for an office visit. For what??!!! For us to sit there and wait? Please do not waste your time with this place!!EDIT: IT IS NOW DEC 27 AND THEY ARE STILL SAYING I OWE THEM MONEY AND WILL BE SENDING ME TO COLLECTIONS FOR THIS. THIS PLACE IS A SCAM.

i went in yesterday morning because my puppy got parvo. they were ready to treat him with the best care but told me it would be around 3,000 and that they do not do payment plans. they do offer carecredit, but if you don’t get approved for that and you can’t pay the fee upfront, they can’t treat your pet. it’s also a $167 charge upfront before they even came out and looked at my dog. i think the place does have the best care, it’s just impossible to get it if you don’t have the financial means the day of emergency.

Would NOT recommend! I regret bringing my cat here. My vet called to say I was coming and it took me 2 hours to get there. Waited almost 2 hours to get seen. The first doc and nurse were nice. I brought the blood work with me because it was just done before I got to the emergency room. And yet they still did it again just to charge me more. Over the night he took a turn for the worst. This rude female doc called me and told me she did the ultra sound ANYWAYS! After trolling me he wasn’t going to make it and he was suffering. So once again they did something they shouldn’t have just to charge me more money! They are super money hungry. Bed side manners are nonexistent! The red head at the emergency room told me I’d get a call to let me know about his carrier and they would send it to me! I got no call and was told 2 days later when I called they don’t send carriers and I’d have to get it or it would be destroyed. Heartless people! Go elsewhere!

We rushed our 11 year old chihuahua to the emergency room after calling them first. He has a collapsed trachea and had been coughing harshly and struggling to catch his breath. The front desk staff was awesome. They immediately took my baby back for treatment. He was seen by a great doctor and staff who were able to provide the help and medication that my baby needed. Thank you so much for all you do.

I took my kitten there this previous Saturday when they apparently had an exceptional number of critical animals, however I got rushed through the process, my cat was seen for no more than 30 minutes and didn't get the attention he required after being a PAYING CUSTOMER! Mind you they double charged me by accident, said it would fall off in a couple days and has since been posted onto my account. No one can afford this nonsensical waste of time or money when a life is on the line. Please do better.

Our 2 year old Great Dane, Duncan, just had a laparoscopic gastropexy at Purdue and we could not have been more pleased with the entire experience! The hospital is lovely as are the individuals who work there. The surgeon, Dr.Anderson, answered all of our questions and made us feel very comfortable with the procedure. The resident, Danny, overseeing Duncan’s care was exceptional. She literally was like a surrogate mother, for two days, to our boy. We were updated at every turn and definitely felt supported throughout Duncan’s two-day stay. Thank you to all!

I took my sweet girl Sadie in today after our other dog attacked her. All said and done we paid over $500 just for an exam and clip and clean, but she’s okay and needed no stitches or surgery. I was impressed with how thorough they were and they made it very easy to pay so much as you can tell the empathy is there. Thank you!Called back today to ask for more pain meds as we weren’t given enough and I have to wait until Monday. Defeats the purpose of being 24 hour. And this is our only “emergency” vet??

I have nuthin but good things to say. I had to put my dogter roxie to sleep cuz she had cancer and they put my heart at ease. I got to hold Roxie and she just went to sleep in my arms. I recommend everyone who has to face that terrible decision go there. U will not be disappointed. The prices were affordable.

Everyone at Purdue University Small animal hospital was wonderful to deal with. Our 14 and a half year old dog, Sophie, was suffering from CCD and couldn't even stand on a Sunday morning. My wife and I made the difficult decision to end her suffering. Purdue's was the only Small animal hospital open on a Sunday morning. They welcomed us and we're very patient and understanding. The doctor communicated everything that would happen and what needed to be done and how Sophie would react. I sat with her on my lap when she took her last breath. Today I came down to pick up her cremains. They were in a beautiful wooden box. There were even two sets of her paw prints for us to enjoy and remember her by. Although it was a terrible day for my wife and I, we can't thank Purdue University, the staff and the doctors enough for all the care, understanding and patience they took with us.

To preface, Dr David Barry was the most diligent and caring veterinarian I have ever worked with. He was sure to tell me every possible thing I needed to know about my cat and has been the most helpful person I have ever spoken to regarding animal health. It was clear from the moment he walked in that he really cared about animals and helping people and I think that world would be a much better place for animals (and their owners) if there were more Dr. David Barry's. The only issues I had regarding this facility was the clear understaffing issues they had. Understand that you will be paying more here than a regular vet, as they will take you in without any notice and treat you and your animal swiftly.

I cannot speak highly enough about my recent experience at Purdue Small Animal Hospital, specifically with Dr. Reuter. Her exceptional bedside manner and expertise truly made our visit outstanding. We were initially anxious about leaving our delicate 3.9 lb puppy for PDA repair, but Dr. Reuter's reassuring and transparent explanations put our minds at ease.As the owner of a dog rescue, I have had the opportunity to interact with numerous veterinarians over the years.
