An authentic German village. Oktoberfest second to none. General store, eateries, and brewhauses as legit as they get. Go now. Actually don't. This is by little town slice of heaven.

We stumbled into town on a whim while driving through the area. I am glad we stopped. It happened to be Oktoberfest weekend and the festivities days were in full effect. The town by itself is amazing, but the added ambience of the German culture brought to life really added to the experience.
It's such a great event that I am planning for future trips during their Oktoberfest weekend.

Iowa's very own piece of Germany. I've been coming here for years, and I don't plan to stop.

The General Store is amazing...and huge. Lots of nooks and crannies, lots of sections off other sections! The Meat Store was excellent. Pastrami and smoke chops...YUMMMM! Fern Hill Gifts and Quilts has everything you could imagine. I purchased earrings and a large mug. My fellow travelers, quilters, purchased quilting materials! They were very pleased. We ate at the Ox Yoke Inn...every bite was delicious! Our table of twelve devoured beets and sourkraut. THE BEST. Of course, we ate everything else, also. I had catfish! Was done to perfection!

Fascinating history, great food and shopping. Wonderful night at the Hotel Millwright. Largest room we have ever had. Very clean and beautifull atmosphere. Be sure to stop by the Visitors Center and absolutely take the 2 1/2 hrs van tour. It really explains the long history and stops at 4 places on the trail. Wish we could hav stayed longer then one night!

We stopped as a “let’s see what this is” stop on our vacation. We didn’t have enough time to “do it all” so we are planning another trip. We ate a fabulous German lunch served family style. We stopped by the museum but it was closing. It looked worth going back to see. We will stay at one of the many cute B&Bs next time and shop in all the wonderful shops full of handmade items including iron work, pottery, handwork, fabric, and food. We will be back!!!

A visit to this quaint, peaceful collection of seven villages along the Iowa River valley is a must when in Eastern Iowa. Here, you will find an extensive and engaging offering of museums and historic buildings to tour, which detail the rich heritage of the Amana colonies and the people. Shopping for handcrafted items in a good number of shops; rugs, furniture, baskets, food, fine art, jewelry, and more. Round out your visit with a meal at one of the three or four restaurants featuring hearty Midwestern fare, some with a German flavor.

Drove through the town as I was in the area for an event, wish I had time to stop as the shops and everything look so cool.
