The ladies who work here are very friendly, salt-of-the-earth folks. It's always a very welcoming place. They're also really good about calling checkout help to the front if there's a line. Like most dollar stores, it is rather messy, with a lot of carts and boxes of unpacked product out in the aisles. But this is the place to come for affordable cleaning supplies, kitchen utensils, plastic organizers, toiletries, and other little household things that are often 2-3x more expensive elsewhere. I generally steer clear of the foodstuffs, but every now and then I find a deal on a quality item (like name brand A1 sauce).

The new DT in Ames is a disaster. Most shelves are bare. Boxes everywhere. Can hardly get a cart down the isles. The cashier asked if I found everything ok! I looked at him and said NO this store is a disaster! He told me they’re short staffed. Well I’m sorry if your short staff why even open this location.

This DT store is basically a disaster. Missing inventory. Major sections of shelving completely bare. Hard to find products. 1 staff person visible for my entire 15min shopping time.

Sadly, it seems that they haven't cleaned this store up yet. The shelves were pathetically empty, and the place was filthy.
I asked the cashier if they always had such empty shelves. She said that the manager was recently let go and hadn't been stocking the shelves. She said they had boxes and boxes of things in the back that were just sitting there.
She said they brought in temp employees to stock the store and even had to close for 2 days because the manager didn't schedule people to work.
Ames is a college town and really should have a well stocked Dollar Tree to help people out with food costs.
I'm not blaming the staff. The woman who checked me out was super friendly and efficient. It appears to be a severe management problem. Corporate needs to step up to the plate.
I do need to note that there was one cashier who yelled over the loud speaker to ask if someone was shopping with the bathroom key and to bring it to the front. Heck, if I were that person, I would be mortified. Turns out, the person was still in the bathroom.

Price is the main advantage here as some stuff despite having low quality are very cheap. It’s not very clean and could be messy.

“Dollar Twenty Five Tree” is always a great place to go for surprise deals on products. It has been my go-to for theater size candies and popcorn for years. The salsa stocked in the snack aisle is very good for the price. The aisles can be messy from customer traffic, but it’s expected for this type of store.
