Great BBQ in the District. Had ribs, Andouille sausage and brisket. All extremely good but the brisket is amazing! Incredibly tender and wonderful smoked flavor. No sauce needed. We will definitely be regulars.

With 10 years personally working in the food industry -> I can say that Al keeps a VERY tidy shop, the food is always hot & Big Al is almost always in there personally checking on his patrons.

My husband, our son and myself decided we’d check out the newest location of my husband’s favorite BBQ joint. We’ve been to the location near the airport and I think the original location on East University. It had been years since we visited either location though. Last weekend we decided to try the new location in Ankeny b/c it’s so much closer to where we live. The staff were fantastic. Very friendly and very knowledgeable. The atmosphere was a bit too trendy for our taste but it’s in a trendy part of Ankeny so it is what it is. The food was good but no where near good enough for the price. It cost my family of three over $75 for walk up counter LUNCH! I’m honestly not sure if we’ll be going back there anytime soon. Which sucks b/c we enjoyed every over time before this one. :/

Very Disappointing. Spent $20 for 3 slices of Brisket, small portion of worst than kraft macaroni and white peice of bread.

I just had the smoked turkey 1/3lb sandwich, fries and a drink. I tipped 30% and the price was still reasonable. Food was great and so was the customer service! Would highly recommend.

We ate there for the first time tonight. Service was good and nice. Paid $23 for a half rack of ribs and they were burnt, dry and well look at the pic. My girlfriend liked the brisket which looked much better than what I was served. Based on the ribs, I probably wouldn’t rush to go back and I can’t recommend it based on this food experience. Disappointing for a $50 meal as we chose this over Smokey d’s tonight. Wish it was better for sure

Food was good, but for overall experience it seems a little on the expensive side particularly for counter service. Some had the slider basket and the cheeseburger and tenderloin are good sized. Chicken sandwich was quite small, but tasty. Burnt ends were good, didn't seem like much in quantity. Sides are quite small for the price, but one in our party said the potato salad was quite good.

We used a sweet deal for 50$ of food for 25$. Been here twice. The prices are expensive as heck for a cafeteria style serve your self fast food joint. We got one rack of ribs to share between us the first time and onion strings and 2 drinks for 55$. The ribs were good, not great. The onion strings fantastic. The second visit we had cheeseburgers paid extra for fries, an order of full onion strings, and 2 diet cokes. Price was 59$. The onion strings were great. The cheeseburgers were really bad. Burnt dry meat, unidentifiable cheese, 3 pickles, 3 pieces of onion on a very dry bun. The fries were very freezer burned and tasted like the oil in the fryers haven't been changed in a while. I did not eat my food. Paid 18$ per burger and fries, 10$ for the onion strings which were worth it, 8$ for 2 diet cokes! Bypass this place and go somewhere else within 50 ft.

Wow! Just wow! What a great little gem in the District in Ankeny. Everything we tried is so good. So much better than any other BBQ options. Huh have to give it a try

Excellent barbecue, and I was so glad to see a half chicken on the menu! Lovely outdoor seating. Sticky, smoky, and yum!

Very limited menu. Food was very subpar. My kids wouldn't even eat the Mac n cheese. Person at register was not nice. Advertised easy eddy beer in window but only had coors/bud light. First and last time here. This place does not belong in the district, waste of prime location.

The menu was a little confusing but with some help from staff I got some food ordered. If I were to make a suggestion on a menu item a sampler platter would be very welcome. I would have liked to try more of the meats on offer but just trying 3 ran up the price like crazy. I elected to try the ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and jalepeno cream corn as a side. Lots of food, had leftovers for lunch the next day.I read that the ribs were pretty good with smoky flavor in other reviews; that was not the case for the ones I was served. The meat was moist and fall off the bone but very lacking in flavor or smoke. I would directly compare them to ribs that had been slow cooked in a crock-pot with limited seasoning. What saved the day was the bbq sauce that came on them. It was very tangy and bold and rescued the otherwise rather bland rib meat. The brisket was ok. I'm particular about my brisket so dont let my luke-warmness prevent you from trying it. Primarily beefy taste with a hint of smoke finished with the flavor from the coarse pepper. The pulled pork gets my stamp of approval. The price was right and the flavor on point. Moist, delicious, and the smoke was present but not overpowering. If I was in the area again I would go for the pulled pork drizzled with whatever sauce they dress the ribs with.Jalepeno creamed corn gets two thumbs up. It's a slow burn but not overly spicy and it works with the creamed corn very well. Would definitely enjoy again.

Food is good, but the staff is really top notch. My family and I have been here several times, and they always go the extra mile. Great place.
