The American Gothic House Center sits adjacent to the original American Gothic House, aka Dibble House. This house inspired Grant Wood to paint "American Gothic" in 1930. Although this painting is in Chicago at the Art Institute, the iconic house still sits in Eldon, and thousands of people come each year to see it. A small admission fee to the visitor center allows guests to peruse the exhibition gallery, watch a documentary, or dress up in costumes for their own "American Gothic" photo. Hands-on exhibits are a highlight for children, and all visitors are welcome in the gift shop. However, the interior of the house is generally closed to the public. This place was described as really fun, a quick stop if you're in the area, and a must-see if you're an Iowan or traveling through the state. Visitors can borrow similar clothes that match the clothing from the painting to recreate the iconic image. Even when the visitor center is closed, there is a selfie stand where you can prop up your phone to take your own "American Gothic" photo. The house has been well-preserved and is a significant piece of American history. Overall, the American Gothic House Center provides an engaging and educational experience for visitors, offering the opportunity to learn about Grant Wood's famous painting and take their own unique photos in front of the iconic house.
This is an iconic American painting and historical location. It has a nice little museum with a great video and photo opportunities. This was just a necessary stop for us going through Iowa
