The Danish Windmill is a museum that celebrates Denmark, Danish customs, Scandinavian traditions, and the history of windmills. Located in Elk Horn, Iowa, it is America's only authentic working Danish Windmill. Originally built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848, the Mill was brought to the United States in 1975 and rebuilt by community volunteers in 1976. The Danish Windmill has been restored to working condition and serves as a historical and educational museum. It is a must-visit attraction for families on road trips, offering a chance to climb to the top of the mill and explore its mechanical workings. The on-site gift shop provides the opportunity to purchase souvenirs and snacks. Visitors describe the site as a "beautiful piece of history" with friendly staff, making it a worthy addition to any travel itinerary.
The cutest little tourist stop, with friendly guide to show you around the mill! Worth the $5 to support a local business and the vision of a man 50 years ago to bring a windmill from Denmark to the US.
