Through the years Marie and I adopted six cats from this excellent shelter where you can get to know your cat before adoption. I think we were picked out by our cats as much as we pucked them out. The staff made adoption smooth. They sre friendly and care about the animals. Adopt!

If at all possible, do not surrender your animal here. Drive up to Minneapolis where your pet will have a chance to find a home. There are sweet, beautiful, easily placed dogs stuck in this Mason City shelter for months and even years. Several of the dogs here would be adopted into happy situations within hours if they hadn't had the bad luck to be surrendered at this location. I'm giving it a two because there was a man in the back working hard to give the dogs clean pens and at least some attention. With so many sad animals, he seemed to be doing his best.

All the animals are so adorable. Definitely filled out an application. Can't wait to bring home a kitty.

Great facility, warm and caring staff. It was clean and the animals where all well cared for. I wish we could have took them all home. Bought a tshirt and donated some cash to help with the exception care at the Humane Society of North Iowa.

I tried to adopt a dog from the Humane Society. They told me I couldn't have him just because I live in an apartment and then they told me I couldn't have him just because I have a cat. They're very judgmental and prejudice when I told them that it wasn't right to judge people based off their living situation if they live in an apartment or a house, they said thank you for your opinion and hung up in my face. I don't know if this is the best place to take your animal or take an animal if they want to be adopted to find a good home you can't be judgmental just because someone lives in an apartment that's why an animal will never be able to find a good home. The dog was named Hickory by the way. They don't want to give him up they are being selfish with him I should've known when they said multiple people wanted him, but it never worked out. I agree with the rest of the reviews of them saying they're very biased. Let's find hickory a good home he needs it.

Adopted a dog from this shelter about 5 years ago. Dog has been well taken cared for and loved. I live in the country which would be great for a other high energy breed of dog that is bread to be a ranch hearding dog. The people at this shelter are super bias though. They would rather adopt a dog like that to someone living in town where the dog will be cabled up or stuck inside 95% of the day. Just sad and despicable.

We went in trying to adopt a new family member. And fell in love with one of the pups there. The pup we wanted had no one's interested. So we went and filled out the application to hopefully get him. Mind you that we had already adopted from here before and still have him. We just want one more member. So they deny us for getting him, we live in the country. They said he's better off with being more around his own kind. That's the response we get. Would Never recommend this place to anyone. What a joke... gives adopt a bad name. Very sad people who works here.

Horrible experience friend and I dropped of 2 strays and they said they couldn’t take them in because of city limits even tho they were found outside of mason city. Friend left them there cause she shouldn’t have the responsibility of 2 strays that aren’t even hers and she explained to them multiple times that she couldn’t take them, and they weren’t being nice. The lady actually yelled at us to put the leashes back on them even though they were inside the building and no one was going to come In especially when it’s pouring out. The cop didn’t even tell us to put the leashes back on. She was mean and didn’t seem to care at all. It’s funny that you work for them when you could care less about strays being found and being brought in when she could’ve just left them there.

Went there the other day to look at a few different dogs I was interested in adopting. I walk with a cane and noticed one of the dogs wasn’t a fan which is ok, but when I saw a dog that was ready and willing to come home with me I went to the front desk to ask about adopting him and was told to fill out an application. As I’m sitting filling one out a woman came up from the back and tried to discourage me from filling out the application. Saying the dog would be very chaotic and also wouldn’t like canes and when I mentioned that he came up to me just fine she just kind of stammered and turned around and whispered, “well I tried.” She doesn’t know the situation I have going on at my house in my opinion she was very rude and unprofessional.
